About Dr Sofia Metaxa

Dr Sofia Metaxa is a Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, practising at Princess Margaret Hospital. She also holds an honorary contract with University College London Hospitals (UCLH).

Dr Metaxa has extensive experience in the management of complex cardiac conditions and is dedicated to delivering individualised, patient-centred care. Her clinical expertise spans all areas of general cardiology, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidaemia, arrhythmias, syncope, structural heart disease, and heart failure.

She is a Heart Failure Specialist, accredited by the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association, with specialist interests in cardiac implantable electronic devices and stress echocardiography. Dr Metaxa routinely performs procedures such as single- and dual-chamber pacemaker implantation, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac loop recorders. She is a member of the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and holds full BSE accreditation in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography and Stress Echocardiography.

Dr Metaxa graduated from Athens Medical School in 2003 and completed a Master’s degree in Coronary Care Units. She earned a PhD from Athens Medical School for her doctoral research on genetic polymorphisms in ischaemic heart disease. She undertook postgraduate specialist cardiology training in Athens, completing her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology in 2013.

Since joining Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Metaxa has played a key role in developing the Heart Failure Service and the Stress Echocardiography programme. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is actively involved in medical education, including teaching medical students, mentoring junior doctors, and supervising cardiology trainees.
