Mr Sam Evans is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with specialist expertise in cataract surgery, oculoplastic surgery, and the management of a broad range of eye conditions.
He completed his early medical training in the South West of England, working as a junior doctor in Exeter and Barnstaple before relocating to Wales in 2009 to undertake specialist ophthalmology training. Over the following decade, he trained across South Wales, including Carmarthen and later the University Hospital of Wales, where he developed advanced expertise in ophthalmic surgery.
Mr Evans completed higher subspecialty training in oculoplastic and orbital surgery, providing specialist care for conditions affecting the eyelids, tear drainage system, eye socket, and surrounding structures. Alongside this, he gained extensive experience in cataract surgery and general ophthalmology.
In 2019, he returned to Exeter as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. He has played a significant role in developing streamlined cataract treatment pathways and has pioneered "see-and-treat" cataract services in the South West and Wales. This innovative approach allows many patients to have consultations remotely, reducing hospital visits and improving access to surgery.
Mr Evans is a highly experienced high-volume cataract surgeon, performing approximately 400 cataract operations a year, with a very high satisfaction rate (PHIN data https://www.phin.org.uk/profiles/consultants/sam-evans-262670?userLocationCoordinates=51.8575796%2C-4.3119032&userLocationInput=Carmarthen&specialtyId=45)
His principal clinical interests include cataract surgery, oculoplastic surgery, glaucoma management, and general ophthalmic conditions. He is known for his patient-centred approach, working closely with patients and their families to provide personalised care, clear communication, and high-quality surgical outcomes.
He has been a pioneer of "see and treat" cataract surgery, delivering excellent outcomes for patients, without the need for pre surgical clinic appointments.

Mr Evans was very helpful and clean in explaining what was wrong with my eyes and how he could help
I was very pleased with the whole experience. Mr Evans was clear , thorough and professional throughout. He set my expectations very well and overall I am delighted with the outcome
All very professional and seems very successful so far, still have a couple of weeks of eye drops to go
Dad was having a cateract operation and the whole experience was very reassuring and calm. The care was excellent from the nurses to the surgeon.
Quick appointment and treatment. Resolved the issue completely.
Reception and preliminary tests and questionnaire were undertaken in a relaxed manner and a quiet atmosphere and calm efficiency did much to steady any nervousness. The friendly support during the treatment was much appreciated as was the light-hearted banter between the team. This was a diversion which enabled the patient to be still while the surgeon plied his skills. Ample time was given afterwards to relax and to receive instructions on administration of a variety of drops. The overall experience inspired admiration for the cohesion and support of the team to enable Mr Evans to apply his magic.
Staff friendly and caring. Mr Evans told me what he was doing throughout procedure. Having just one eye operated on has given me my life back. Booked for other eye in July
All involved in my care were pleasant, helpful and efficient
