Dr Ramamurthy Sathyamurthy

Dr Ramamurthy Sathyamurthy is a highly experienced specialist in general internal medicine and respiratory medicine, based at The James Cook University Hospital. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in 1995, and later completed a Master of Science by Research in Medicine at Warwick University in 2013. In recognition of his expertise and contributions to the field, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 2015.

Dr Sathyamurthy has extensive experience in managing a wide range of respiratory conditions, with particular expertise in breathlessness, chronic cough, chest pain, and sleep-related disorders. He leads several specialist services across the North East and Cumbria, including the Advanced Emphysema Service, where he treats patients with complex and severe disease, and the Severe Asthma Service, delivering innovative treatments that have significantly improved patient outcomes.

He also leads the Non-Invasive Ventilation service, supporting patients with sleep-related breathing disorders through therapies such as CPAP. His clinical interests include interventional bronchoscopy, lung cancer, pleural disease, sleep apnoea and post-COVID respiratory symptoms, alongside advanced treatments such as endobronchial valves for COPD.
