About Dr Protima Deb

Dr Protima Deb is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist based in London. She currently sees patients privately at One Hatfield Hospital and The Portland Hospital for Women and Children.  As well as her substantive consultant role in the NHS, she
holds an honorary senior clinical lectureship at Queen Mary University.

She completed her medical degree at Imperial College London in 2002, where her passion for research flourished during her intercalated BSc in Haematology. Dr Deb completed her paediatric training in London, subsequently developing a special interest in Gastroenterology. This field appealed to her due to its rapid advancements and the extensive learning opportunities it offers. Her specialist field of interest is exploring the gut microbiota in childhood inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Deb is a self-confessed research
enthusiast, and she balances her clinical and academic duties in addition to giving lectures about her work at national and international conferences.

She has specialist expertise of performing diagnostic endoscopy. Dr Deb is a JAG accredited trainer in endoscopy.

She is a member of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition as well as a member of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Paediatric gastroenterology captivates Dr Deb as it provides a balance between general paediatrics and specialised knowledge. It also allows her to perform practical procedures, including endoscopy, and to pursue her interest in academic research, which remains a driving passion.

Dr Deb's PhD thesis investigated the role of the microbiome in childhood Crohn's disease. She is deeply intrigued by the human microbiome and its connection to health and disease. One of her ambitions is to elucidate the role of gut bacteria in childhood inflammatory bowel disease and explore the potential of modulating the microbiota to achieve long-term disease-free remission in children with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis.

Her dedication to advancing the field of paediatric gastroenterology and her commitment to improving patient outcomes through research make Dr Deb a valuable asset to One Hatfield Hospital and The Portland Hospital.

Our 8 year old son has food allergies. He is desensitised to peanut through oral immunotherapy treatment. We attempted Oral Immunotherapy Treatment for dairy and egg in the Autumn. It didn’t work. Our son started to develop severe stomach pains around Xmas. We and our allergy doctors were very worried that he had eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease and he should stop the peanut dosing which we had worked hard to introduce for him. We were recommended to see a paediatric gastroenterologist. There are none in Devon where we live. In Bristol we found they couldn’t see us for sometime. Thankfully we were encouraged to contact Dr Deb. Having been through a very worrying time with our son missing a lot of school we felt in safe hands with Dr Deb from the moment we first spoke with her. She listened, responded very quickly and thoughtfully (even calling me personally on the first day we contacted her). Dr Deb made us feel confident about our son having a colonoscopy and gastroscopy to find out what was the matter by replying to all our queries quickly via email and fitting us in quickly on her list too. She made us feel well cared for which was so important as we felt in such a mess. We loved the way she explained everything so clearly to our son. He responded so well to her and has taken on board her excellent advice. She is a wonderful Doctor who I would highly recommend. Simon her assistant was very quick to reply to us too. Thank you both.

We recently had a consultation with Dr Deb, and it was an incredibly positive experience. From the very beginning she showed genuine warmth and interest, not only in our son’s medical history but also in our journey as parents and the impact this has had on us as a family. She created a safe space where we felt truly listened to and reassured, never overwhelmed by medical jargon, and always guided through the reasons for investigations and ongoing referrals. Her ability to combine professional expertise with empathy was outstanding. She explained what has worked well so far, what could be adapted moving forward, and set out a clear management plan that gave us confidence and clarity. Most importantly, she made us feel we were not alone in this — that the challenges we’ve faced were acknowledged, that our efforts so far were valued, and that there is now a wraparound plan of care and support in place. After a year of struggling to get answers in primary care, this consultation with Dr Deb has left us feeling empowered, supported, and more hopeful. We are very grateful for her time, care, and professionalism.
