About Dr Protima Deb

Dr Protima Deb is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist based in London. She currently sees patients privately at One Hatfield Hospital and The Portland Hospital for Women and Children.  As well as her substantive consultant role in the NHS, she
holds an honorary senior clinical lectureship at Queen Mary University.

She completed her medical degree at Imperial College London in 2002, where her passion for research flourished during her intercalated BSc in Haematology. Dr Deb completed her paediatric training in London, subsequently developing a special interest in Gastroenterology. This field appealed to her due to its rapid advancements and the extensive learning opportunities it offers. Her specialist field of interest is exploring the gut microbiota in childhood inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Deb is a self-confessed research
enthusiast, and she balances her clinical and academic duties in addition to giving lectures about her work at national and international conferences.

She has specialist expertise of performing diagnostic endoscopy. Dr Deb is a JAG accredited trainer in endoscopy.

She is a member of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition as well as a member of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Paediatric gastroenterology captivates Dr Deb as it provides a balance between general paediatrics and specialised knowledge. It also allows her to perform practical procedures, including endoscopy, and to pursue her interest in academic research, which remains a driving passion.

Dr Deb's PhD thesis investigated the role of the microbiome in childhood Crohn's disease. She is deeply intrigued by the human microbiome and its connection to health and disease. One of her ambitions is to elucidate the role of gut bacteria in childhood inflammatory bowel disease and explore the potential of modulating the microbiota to achieve long-term disease-free remission in children with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis.

Her dedication to advancing the field of paediatric gastroenterology and her commitment to improving patient outcomes through research make Dr Deb a valuable asset to One Hatfield Hospital and The Portland Hospital.

Having seen a range of Doctors in support of our daughters IBD, we found that on meeting Dr Deb the level of care and progress went to a new level. Seeing our daughter as a whole person and seeking to understand her situation before explaining any course of action. Dr Deb's experience and confidence are both reassuring. The positivity and solutions focused approach are a key feature to the progress our daughter has made. We will always be grateful.

We had an incredibly positive experience with Dr Deb. After years of appointments without much progress, we achieved more in just one consultation than we have over a long period of time. Since seeing her, we’ve already noticed improvements. With her guidance, we’ve been able to gradually adjust our daughter’s diet and reduce her medication significantly. While she is still experiencing some symptoms—particularly during stressful periods like exams—this was something Dr Deb had prepared us for, which has been reassuring. Perhaps the biggest change has been in our daughter’s mindset. Previously she was certain she wanted an endoscopy, but after the consultation she now feels much more comfortable and is no longer set on that path. This shift is entirely down to Dr Deb’s incredibly supportive and understanding approach. We are continuing with the current plan and feel much more confident about the direction we’re taking. We’re very grateful for the care, empathy, and expertise Dr Deb has shown, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.

We recently took my daughter to see Dr Deb, and I honestly cannot speak highly enough of her. She was the loveliest, kindest doctor — incredibly patient, compassionate, and clearly extremely knowledgeable. From the moment we met her, she made both myself and my 8 year old feel completely at ease. She took the time to explain everything clearly to both of us, ensuring we fully understood what was happening and what the next steps were. Most importantly, she made my daughter feel genuinely heard and listened to, which meant so much. It was also very reassuring to see that she did not want to put my daughter through any unnecessary tests and approached everything with such care and professionalism. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend her to anyone else, and I would happily return to her in the future if we ever needed further help. Overall, it was the most positive experience we could possibly have imagined. A truly lovely lady and an exceptional doctor.

Our 8 year old son has food allergies. He is desensitised to peanut through oral immunotherapy treatment. We attempted Oral Immunotherapy Treatment for dairy and egg in the Autumn. It didn’t work. Our son started to develop severe stomach pains around Xmas. We and our allergy doctors were very worried that he had eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease and he should stop the peanut dosing which we had worked hard to introduce for him. We were recommended to see a paediatric gastroenterologist. There are none in Devon where we live. In Bristol we found they couldn’t see us for sometime. Thankfully we were encouraged to contact Dr Deb. Having been through a very worrying time with our son missing a lot of school we felt in safe hands with Dr Deb from the moment we first spoke with her. She listened, responded very quickly and thoughtfully (even calling me personally on the first day we contacted her). Dr Deb made us feel confident about our son having a colonoscopy and gastroscopy to find out what was the matter by replying to all our queries quickly via email and fitting us in quickly on her list too. She made us feel well cared for which was so important as we felt in such a mess. We loved the way she explained everything so clearly to our son. He responded so well to her and has taken on board her excellent advice. She is a wonderful Doctor who I would highly recommend. Simon her assistant was very quick to reply to us too. Thank you both.
