About Professor Barbara McGowan

Dr Barbara McGowan graduated in Biochemistry from Oxford in 1988 and then worked as a Pharmaceutical Equity Analyst in the City for five years, after which, she studied Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London, graduating in 1998 with Merits. She was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2007 for her work in investigating the role of gut hormones and other neuropeptides in appetite control. She was appointed as a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy's and St Thomas' in 2009.

Her areas of specialism include general endocrinology, including thyroid disease, polycystic ovaries, hypogonadism, adrenal disease, pituitary disease, metabolic disorders and hormone imbalance. She is also interested in managing complex obesity and co-morbidities associated with Type 2 Diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. She leads the obesity bariatric service at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital and is also a general medicine physician

Dr McGowan is an active Trustee of the Association for the Study of Obesity, a SCOPE National Fellow,, the Metabolic and Obesity Endocrine Network Lead for the Society of Endocrinology and Treasurer for the Society for Endocrinology. She is also a member of the RCP Nutrition Committee and the RCP Committee on Weight and Health.

A useful second visit to report back on my experience of being on Mounjaro . I feel it is very important to discuss with the doctor side-effects that I have been experiencing and to be given advice on how to deal with these - diarrhoea followed by constipation and nausea.
