About Professor Alan McNeill

Professor Alan McNeill is a Consultant Urological Surgeon practising at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals Murrayfield, Shawfair Park, and The Ulster Independent Clinic in Belfast. He also serves as a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer with Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. Professor McNeill specialises in all aspects of prostate disease and kidney surgery, with particular expertise in benign prostate disease, prostate cancer, prostate surgery including laser surgery, UroLift®, and Aquablation.

He has over two decades of experience in urology and previously worked as Lead Clinician for Urology at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. His subspecialist expertise includes laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and he has played a leading role in the development of minimal access surgical programmes in Scotland and the wider UK. Professor McNeill has carried out more than 500 laparoscopic nephrectomies and nearly 3,000 laparoscopic or robot-assisted prostatectomies, making him one of the most experienced surgeons in this field nationally. His surgical outcomes are closely monitored through local and national audit programmes, which he helped establish.

Professor McNeill has undertaken advanced training in minimal access surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and at the University Hospital, Leipzig. His clinical work also includes Bipolar TURP, Green Light Laser ablation, and the introduction of robot-assisted Aquablation in Scotland. In recognition of his expertise, he was named among the UK’s top ten prostate cancer surgeons by the Daily Mail.

Alongside his clinical practice, Professor McNeill has held a range of leadership positions. He was elected Secretary and later Chairman of the British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Oncology Executive Committee, chaired the Surgical Specialty Board for Urology at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Journal of Urology International Charity, supporting education in urology worldwide. He was a founding figure of Prostate Scotland, a charity dedicated to raising awareness of prostate health.

He is actively involved in research into prostate disease, working with collaborators from Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh on projects funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and The Urology Foundation. This research led to the creation of the spinout company IntelliPalp Dx. He also remains active in postgraduate training and skills development for minimal access surgery, contributing to national and international courses.

Professor McNeill has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and continues to contribute to clinical research and education. He holds Honorary Professor titles in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh.

He is a member of several professional bodies, including the British Association of Urological Surgeons, the European Association of Urology, and the Association of Academic European Urologists. He also sits on the Specialty Advisory Board in Urology at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

I had a helpful appointment with Professor McNeill who examined me before explaining a probable diagnosis. For treatment options, he deferred to a colleague specialising in the subject-domain of urology relevant to my needs. I was very satisfied with the whole consultation.

On initial consultation, Professor McNeill provided clear advice about the benefits and possible risks of robotic assisted radical prostatectomy and discussed alternative options for the biopsy findings. His communication was clear and unhurried. He took time to answer questions and provided telephone numbers to contact him once I had decided on what path of treatment I had decided upon. Surgery was carried out without delay and care both pre op and afterwards was very attentive. Review arrangements clearly communicated and I was copied in to all correspondence.

Professor McNeil clearly described the options for treatment of my BPH condition in association with a physical examination. Professor McNeil's obvious expert knowlege and skill together with his kindly manner made me feel totally at ease. The ability to have an Ultrasound scan at the the appointment aided Professor McNeil's diagnosis and in proposing the the most appropriate surgical method. Thank you to Professor McNeil and his team at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital who have been equally professional, friendly and efficient throughout.

I was really concerned about having prostate cancer and very worried. After a session with Alan - I was reassured he could remove the prostate but suggested I look at the other alternatives . I did as he had suggested and felt the way forward was removal as I have anxiety and could not with the radio therapy sessions. After making my decision - Alan organised the surgery within weeks and I have never looked back. His follow up sessions have been very good and supportive - a big thanks to a true professional .
