Mr Paul Hegarty

Mr Paul Hegarty is a highly qualified Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee preservation surgery, joint reconstruction, and sports traumatology. Dedicated to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care, he focuses on diagnosing and treating a comprehensive spectrum of lower limb and joint disorders. His primary clinical objective is joint preservation, seeking to maintain natural joint function, restore stability, and delay or prevent the need for major joint replacements in active individuals.

In his surgical practice, Mr Hegarty manages complex knee injuries and degenerative joint conditions. His areas of expertise encompass advanced ligament reconstruction, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and multiligament procedures. He performs specialised cartilage repair, meniscal repair, patellofemoral stabilisation, and corrective osteotomies to realign limb mechanics and offload damaged cartilage. When conservative and restorative measures are no longer suitable, Mr Hegarty performs unicompartmental knee replacement, total knee replacement, patellofemoral replacement, and total hip replacement surgeries to restore mobility and alleviate chronic pain.

Mr Hegarty completed his undergraduate medical education at Queen's University Belfast, graduating with his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BCh BAO) in 2011. He subsequently completed postgraduate orthopaedic training in Northern Ireland, attaining Membership (MRCS) in 2014 and Fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCSEd Tr&Orth) in 2020 from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. To further refine his surgical skills, he completed an advanced sub-specialty fellowship in sports medicine and knee preservation in Canada. He maintains active professional affiliations with international orthopaedic organisations, including the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), the Patellofemoral Foundation, and the Irish Knee Society.
