He is highly experienced in managing endocrine disorders in the outpatient and inpatient setting including during pregnancy, ensuring optimal maternal and foetal outcomes. In addition, Dr Murphy has advanced proficiency in all aspects of diabetes care, encompassing type 1 diabetes management, the integration of diabetes technologies, and strategies for preventing diabetes complications. His practice incorporates the latest therapeutic approaches for type 2 diabetes, with broad experience in the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, which are also employed for weight management. Furthermore, Dr Murphy provides specialist care for lipid/cholesterol management, addressing abnormalities in cholesterol and triglyceride levels to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Qualifications

Background and Education
Dr Murphy graduated from Peninsula Medical School (University of Exeter and University of Plymouth) with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) between 2007 and 2013. He also completed an Intercalated Bachelor of Science in International Relations at Plymouth University, achieving First Class Honours. His postgraduate qualifications include:

  • Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP) – 2017
  • Specialty Certification in Diabetes and Endocrinology – 2020

He has pursued continuous professional development through advanced courses and conferences, including the Society for Endocrinology British Endocrine Society Conference, Diabetes Technology Network UK course, and specialist training in Monogenic Diabetes and Reproductive Endocrinology.

Dr Murphy’s clinical reflects a structured progression through NHS training pathways. He began his postgraduate journey with the Foundation Programme between 2013 and 2015.

From 2015 to 2017, he undertook Core Medical Training. These formative years allowed him to develop expertise in managing complex medical conditions and laid the groundwork for his future specialisation.

Between 2017 and 2023, Dr Murphy advanced through Specialty Training in General Internal Medicine and Diabetes and Endocrinology. During this period, he held senior roles across several major UK hospitals, including Southmead Hospital in Bristol, Gloucester Royal Hospital, Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) at Churchill Hospital. His training combined high-level clinical practice with academic engagement. In 2022, Dr Murphy was appointed Chief Registrar for Medicine at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, a leadership role supported by the Royal College of Physicians’ flagship work-based leadership programme. In this capacity, he contributed to service improvement, workforce planning, and educational initiatives during a challenging period for the NHS.

In January 2024, Dr Murphy achieved his current position as Consultant Endocrinologist at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. Alongside his clinical duties, he leads departmental governance for diabetes and endocrinology and chairs the Trust Diabetes and Insulin Safety Group, reflecting his commitment to patient safety and quality improvement.
