About Dr Nirupam Purkayastha

Dr Nirupam Purkayastha is a Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician with specialist expertise in inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, gout, chronic pain and ultrasound-guided joint assessment and treatment. He has around 18 years of medical experience and currently practises privately at AN Medical Services, The Charterhouse Clinic, Marylebone, London, while also holding consultant rheumatology roles within the NHS.

He graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, in 2008 and subsequently completed specialist training in both Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine, achieving specialist registration in 2020. His clinical background includes work at King’s College Hospital, Southend Hospital, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore, and a current consultant role at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

He completed a PhD in Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology at the William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London, in 2021, focusing on joint ultrasound in inflammatory arthritis and gene analysis of joint tissue. His research has contributed to the understanding of inflammatory arthritis and was published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

At AN Medical Services, Dr Purkayastha provides specialist rheumatology consultations as well as targeted assessment for people concerned about rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. He has developed structured screening pathways incorporating blood investigations, specialist consultation and, where appropriate, DEXA scanning. His clinical work places particular emphasis on early diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis, helping patients access appropriate treatment before irreversible joint damage develops.

He also has a strong interest in chronic pain and difficult-to-manage musculoskeletal symptoms, continually exploring new approaches to symptom control and quality of life. More recent educational work has addressed developments in osteoporosis management, inflammatory arthritis and emerging approaches to chronic pain. Dr Purkayastha has a strong academic interest in rheumatoid arthritis, early inflammatory arthritis, musculoskeletal ultrasound and molecular analysis of joint tissue. His doctoral work examined ultrasound findings and gene expression within joints affected by inflammatory arthritis, supporting efforts to better understand disease mechanisms and improve personalised treatment.

His research was published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, and he continues to explore emerging approaches to managing rheumatological conditions and chronic pain. His wider academic work can also be viewed through his ResearchGate profile. Dr Purkayastha currently has a 5.0/5 rating from 14 verified patient reviews on Top Doctors. Recent feedback particularly highlights his approachable manner, professionalism, clear explanations and willingness to listen carefully to patients’ concerns.

It was my first time meeting with Dr Purkayastha and I couldn't be more pleased with the experience. He was very patient and thorough when taking my medical history and doing a physical exam. He was able to quickly give a diagnosis and recommended a number of things to help with symptom relief. All in all, the appointment took 45 minutes and not once did I feel rushed. I won't hesitate to come back!
