About Mr Stephen Lake
Mr. Stephen Lake graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1978 with a First Class Honours Degree in Medicine. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1982. He then pursued surgical training at the Royal Free Hospital in London before being appointed as a Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Leicester. During his tenure at Leicester, he completed his surgical training and conducted surgical research, earning a Doctorate (MD) from the University of Leicester and a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
In 1991, Mr. Lake was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon at Worcester Royal Infirmary, where he specialised in colorectal disease. His expertise lies particularly in the investigation and treatment of patients using endoscopic (flexible telescope) and laparoscopic (key-hole) techniques. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Lake has played significant roles in service delivery and management, including positions as Clinical Director for Cancer Services, Clinical Director for Surgery, and Clinical Director for Endoscopy.
He has been instrumental in introducing several successful clinical services to Worcestershire, such as laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced endoscopy techniques including the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP). Mr. Lake served as an Intercollegiate Examiner, the final assessor of Surgical Trainees, for the Intercollegiate Examination Board (Royal College of Surgeons) from 2006 to 2020. He is an accredited National Bowel Cancer Programme Screening Colonoscopist and has been the Clinical Director of the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Programme since 2009.

I was very anxious before my operation but both Mr Lake and the anaesthetist Mr Sellers had a reassuring and calming influence. Everything I was told that would happen did happen, and Mr Lake saw me 2 weeks after the op and confirmed that everything was progressing as it should. I am 3 weeks post op and feel I am well on the way to a full recovery.
