Mr Prashant Jain – Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon

Mr Prashant Jain is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where he has cared for patients since 2006. He is Lead Clinician for Upper GI Cancer for the Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance and has previously led the Upper GI department in Hull.

He trained in surgery at a university teaching hospital in North India before completing specialist surgical training in the Yorkshire region. He is closely involved in training the next generation of surgeons. He is a Laparoscopic Trainer for the Royal College of Surgeons, an examiner for the MRCS and FRCS examinations, and an Honorary Clinical Tutor at Hull York Medical School.

Mr Jain offers a full range of general and specialist surgery, with particular expertise in upper gastrointestinal conditions and weight-loss surgery. He regularly manages complex and revisional cases. Mr Jain takes time to explain each patient’s options clearly, including when surgery is not the best choice. He works closely with dietitians, gastroenterologists and anaesthetists so that every patient has a safe, well-planned pathway from first consultation to recovery.

Areas of expertise

• Weight-loss (bariatric) surgery:  gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (one anastomosis gastric bypass, OAGB), sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band, and revisional weight-loss surgery.
• Hernia and abdominal wall surgery: laparoscopic and open repair of inguinal, femoral, umbilical and hiatus hernias, with or without mesh, and complex incisional hernia repair, including component separation.
• Gallbladder and general abdominal surgery: gallstones, gallbladder polyps and other gallbladder disease, appendicitis, and conditions of the spleen and small bowel.
• Reflux and upper GI disorders:  heartburn and acid reflux, indigestion (dyspepsia), swallowing difficulties, achalasia, peptic ulcers, Barrett’s oesophagus, and Helicobacter pylori testing.
• Cancer surgery: surgery for oesophageal and stomach cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST),
• Minor procedures: removal of lipomas and sebaceous cysts.
• Laparoscopic surgery at Spire Hull with Robotic surgery only available currently at NHS for above conditions
