Professional Profile

Mr Michael Paul O’Neill is an experienced Consultant Podiatrist and Podiatric Surgeon who treats patients of all ages, from paediatric patients to older adults.

For 30 years, Mr O’Neill served as Consultant Podiatrist to the Royal Household. During this time, he had the privilege of caring for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as well as other senior members of the Royal Household.

In 2016, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appointed Mr O’Neill a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in recognition of his services to the Royal Household.

Mr O’Neill is a Fellow of the Royal College of Podiatry. He previously served as Vice President of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists for four years and as a member of its National Executive for 20 years. He has lectured nationally and internationally on a wide range of foot and lower-limb conditions and has regularly contributed expert commentary to the national press, newspapers and magazines.

His approach is to identify the underlying cause of a patient’s symptoms and, wherever appropriate, begin with conservative treatment before considering injections, other interventional treatments or surgery. He works closely with orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, radiologists and physiotherapists to provide coordinated multidisciplinary care.

Elite Sport and Military Experience

Mr O’Neill has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of professional athletes, elite sportspeople and military personnel. He was a member of the Spire Healthcare medical team supporting athletes during the London 2012 Olympic Games. He subsequently provided podiatric care to England Rugby for three years before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr O’Neill has also served as Podiatrist to Surrey County Cricket Club and has provided podiatric care to personnel from five British Army regiments. This work has given him considerable experience in managing sports injuries, overuse conditions and the complex biomechanical demands associated with elite sport and military service.

Clinical Practice

Mr O’Neill’s main office is based at the Alma Medical Centre in Windsor. He also holds clinics at:

He assesses and treats a broad range of foot and lower-limb conditions, including:

• Foot, ankle and lower-limb pain
• Plantar fasciitis and other causes of heel pain
• Achilles tendon disorders
• Bunions and hallux rigidus
• Hammer toes and mallet toes
• Painful corns and calluses
• Ingrowing toenails
• Morton’s neuroma and other nerve-entrapment conditions
• Joint, tendon, ligament and soft-tissue disorders
• Paediatric foot and gait concerns
• Sports-related foot and lower-limb injuries
• Biomechanical abnormalities and gait-related problems
• Plantar warts and verrucae
• Age-related foot problems

Mr O’Neill has a particular interest in the conservative and surgical management of painful corns and calluses. These lesions may result from underlying structural or biomechanical problems and can otherwise require frequent routine treatment. Where appropriate, addressing the underlying cause can provide more lasting relief.

Biomechanical and Gait Assessment

Biomechanical evaluation and gait analysis play an important role in understanding how the foot and lower limb function during standing, walking and sporting activity. Mr O’Neill uses advanced assessment techniques, including:

• Dynamic foot-pressure analysis
• Computerised pressure-mapping systems
• Video gait analysis
• Footwear assessment
• Lower-limb biomechanical evaluation
• Orthotic and insole prescription

Orthotic devices may be prescribed to improve foot and lower-limb function, redistribute pressure, reduce pain and assist rehabilitation. Each device is selected according to the individual patient’s diagnosis, biomechanics, footwear and activity requirements.

Diagnostic Imaging

Where clinically indicated, Mr O’Neill may arrange or review appropriate diagnostic investigations, including:

• X-rays
• Diagnostic ultrasound
• MRI scans

These investigations can help establish an accurate diagnosis and guide an appropriate, individualised treatment plan.

Specialist Treatments and Technology

Patients have access to a comprehensive range of modern treatment and diagnostic facilities, including:

• Focal extracorporeal shockwave therapy
• Radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy
• Swift microwave therapy for plantar warts and verrucae
• Class 4 laser therapy
• Dynamic foot-pressure analysis
• Video gait analysis
• Custom-made and prescription orthotic devices
• Conservative and surgical treatment options

Conservative management is generally recommended as the first line of treatment. More invasive procedures or surgery are considered when clinically indicated and following a full discussion of the expected benefits, limitations, risks and alternatives.

Paediatric Podiatry

Mr O’Neill assesses children of all ages with foot, ankle, gait and lower-limb concerns. Most childhood foot problems can be managed without surgery through observation, advice, footwear modification, exercises, physiotherapy or orthotic intervention.

When surgery is clinically necessary, appropriate paediatric procedures may be undertaken at The Princess Margaret Hospital for children aged three years and over, subject to individual clinical assessment and hospital admission criteria.

NHS Patients

Mr O’Neill formally held an NHS Consultant Podiatric Surgeon post at Barts Health London. He now has an NHS extended care contract at The Spire Thames Valley
Hospital for patients 18 years and older. Referrals would need to be issued from the general practitioner via the Electronic Referral System.
