About Professor Mark Westcott

Professor Mark Westcott is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, glaucoma, medical retina and inflammatory eye disease (uveitis). He practises privately at The London Clinic on Harley Street and within the private wing of Moorfields Eye Hospital.  He and his team run one of the largest private ophthalmic practices in Central London. He provides thousands of consultations and more than 200 procedures each year, including cataract surgery, complex glaucoma surgery and laser treatments. Alongside his private work, he holds longstanding NHS consultant positions at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and at Barts and The Royal London NHS Trust, posts he has held since 2003.

Professor Westcott qualified in medicine from St Thomas’ Hospital in 1989 and completed his ophthalmology training in London, including at Moorfields Eye Hospital. During this period, he received funding from the Friends of Moorfields to undertake research that led to an MD thesis focused on visual function in glaucoma, which he completed in 1997. In 2000, he was awarded a national scholarship in ophthalmology to train at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, where he gained advanced expertise in glaucoma diagnosis and management and contributed further research into the early detection of glaucoma.

Professor Westcott has extensive experience in small incision cataract surgery and was one of the first surgeons in the UK to use microscopic stents for minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. He also has expertise in the use of femtosecond laser technology and advanced lens implants aimed at improving refractive outcomes. He leads the Glaucoma Service at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital and provides specialist care for uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital. In addition to his clinical roles, he is a Surgical Trainer for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he teaches microsurgery and phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Professor Westcott maintains an active academic and research career. He is a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a Reader at Queen Mary University of London. His research interests include infectious and non-infectious uveitis, glaucoma-related visual loss and early diagnostic techniques. He has authored more than 70 scientific papers, co-authored a widely used textbook on uveitis and regularly reviews submissions for leading ophthalmic journals. He presents frequently at national and international scientific meetings and continues to contribute to research and specialist training within the field.

I have given careful consideration to each of the 4 x Questions and have no hesitation in appraising the attention I have been most fortunate to receive with "Top Marks". During the Prelim and Surgery of my Cataract operation, I was extremely nervous but didn't need to be as I never experienced any discomfort what so ever. Although an old man, I still hit the golf ball a very long way and, once again, am now able to clearly watch the flight of my ball (also my opponent's ball!) without any difficulty. Thank you for all you have achieved and I am exceedingly grateful.

At my latest visit I had a scan then a visual field test, my eye pressures were checked and then I saw Professor Westcott. All this was done swiftly, efficiently and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Professor Westcott was pleasant, professional, and highly competent. He explains things clearly and his advice is comforting.

Very friendly environment in nice surroundings. I'm always well treated and have never left unhappy. As the title would suggest Mark is first class in every way and I was extremely lucky to have him assigned to my case a number of years ago.
