About Professor Mark Westcott

Professor Mark Westcott is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, glaucoma, medical retina and inflammatory eye disease (uveitis). He practises privately at The London Clinic on Harley Street and within the private wing of Moorfields Eye Hospital.  He and his team run one of the largest private ophthalmic practices in Central London. He provides thousands of consultations and more than 200 procedures each year, including cataract surgery, complex glaucoma surgery and laser treatments. Alongside his private work, he holds longstanding NHS consultant positions at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and at Barts and The Royal London NHS Trust, posts he has held since 2003.

Professor Westcott qualified in medicine from St Thomas’ Hospital in 1989 and completed his ophthalmology training in London, including at Moorfields Eye Hospital. During this period, he received funding from the Friends of Moorfields to undertake research that led to an MD thesis focused on visual function in glaucoma, which he completed in 1997. In 2000, he was awarded a national scholarship in ophthalmology to train at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, where he gained advanced expertise in glaucoma diagnosis and management and contributed further research into the early detection of glaucoma.

Professor Westcott has extensive experience in small incision cataract surgery and was one of the first surgeons in the UK to use microscopic stents for minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. He also has expertise in the use of femtosecond laser technology and advanced lens implants aimed at improving refractive outcomes. He leads the Glaucoma Service at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital and provides specialist care for uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital. In addition to his clinical roles, he is a Surgical Trainer for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he teaches microsurgery and phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Professor Westcott maintains an active academic and research career. He is a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a Reader at Queen Mary University of London. His research interests include infectious and non-infectious uveitis, glaucoma-related visual loss and early diagnostic techniques. He has authored more than 70 scientific papers, co-authored a widely used textbook on uveitis and regularly reviews submissions for leading ophthalmic journals. He presents frequently at national and international scientific meetings and continues to contribute to research and specialist training within the field.

Professor Mark Westcott first treated me around 2009–2010, when I attended the A&E Department at Moorfields Eye Hospital with scleritis in my right eye. He diagnosed and successfully treated the condition, and I never forgot either his expertise or the confidence he inspired in me. Many years later, when I developed cataract problems and was unhappy with the ophthalmic care I was receiving in Amsterdam, I actually set about finding out what had become of the Moorfields doctor I remembered so well. I was delighted to discover that Professor Westcott was now practising in Harley Street. When we met again after all those years, he was equally surprised when I reminded him that he had treated—and, as I have always felt, saved—my right eye so long ago. Since that rather remarkable reunion, I have once again been under his care, including through my cataract treatment and subsequent follow-up. Professor Westcott combines exceptional knowledge and clinical judgement with a calm, reassuring and thoroughly professional manner. He explains his findings clearly, never makes one feel hurried, and inspires enormous confidence. I feel extremely fortunate that our paths crossed again after so many years. I could not recommend him more highly.

Following cataract surgery in both eyes in recent months, I was examined today by Professor Westcott as a follow up. Today's visit (in August) was very thorough (as was the complete process from initial consultation in February), involving an OCT scan and a series of sight checks by Professor Westcott's colleague Avia. I was happy with the outcome, as I am with the whole experience of having this surgery. My sight is much improved, and I have experienced no significant problems after the treatment. Cataract surgery does require the patient to be willing to folllow the regime of taking multiple eye drops several times a day, for about a month, for each eye. I was able to maintain the discipline required and my eyes have benefited from a problem-free recovery from the surgery. I am delighted that I was recommended to use Professor Westcott and his team at the London Clinic Eye Centre and I would recommend Professor Westcott to others needing this treatment.
