Mr Jonathan Pollock

Mr Jonathan Pollock is a Consultant Neurosurgeon who qualified from the University of Oxford Medical School in 1990 after completing undergraduate studies in Medical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he trained at Gonville and Caius College. He completed his neurosurgical training in Oxford, Nottingham and London before being appointed as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Essex Neurosciences Centre in 2002.

Mr Pollock has extensive expertise in intracranial neurosurgery, particularly the treatment of brain tumours, especially meningioma, pituitary tumours and tumours of the base of the skull. His meningioma series includes over 500 cases operated and several thousand managed , reflecting outstanding experience in this field. In addition, he treats facial pain, including trigeminal neuralgia, amd other neurovascular compression syndromes such as hemifacial spasm.

His spinal practice focuses on degenerative disorders of the spine in adults, particularly the surgical and non-surgical management of neurological symptoms caused by spinal conditions. He regularly treats problems such as brachalgia (arm pain) and sciatica (lower limb pain) associated with degenerative spinal disease. When surgery is required, Mr Pollock places the emphasis on preserving movement within the spine and minimising the patient’s hospital stay. He works closely with experienced colleagues in physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic care, primary care, rheumatology and anaesthetics to provide a multidisciplinary approach to pain management and recovery.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Pollock has a strong academic and research interest in improving surgical care for patients with meningioma and in the history and development of neurosurgery and neurosurgical operative techniques. He is a founding member of the British–Irish Meningioma Group and continues to contribute to advances in this field.

Mr Pollock is the Clinical Lead for Neuro-Oncology, covering brain and spinal tumours, at Essex Neurosciences Centre. He has an active role in medical education, teaching junior surgeons and medical students, and has held several leadership and governance roles within neurosurgery. He previously served as Clinical Director of his NHS department, as a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Neurosurgery, as faculty for national neurosurgical trainee selection, and as a member of the authors’ group for the National Neurosurgical Examination.
