About Mr James Newman

Mr. James Newman, a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics, has been serving at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust since his appointment in 2010. That same year, he joined Nuffield Health and Spire Healthcare Group as a Consultant Knee Surgeon. Specialising exclusively in knee problems, Mr. Newman provides expert care for a wide range of conditions, including ACL reconstruction, partial and total knee replacements, osteotomy, and cartilage regeneration.

Mr. Newman has been instrumental in advancing knee care services within the Mid Yorkshire area. He played a pivotal role in developing a gold-standard knee service and implementing a trust-wide enhanced recovery programme, which significantly improved patient outcomes. Recognised for his contributions, he was appointed Lead Surgeon for Elective Orthopaedic Surgery in 2012.

During his leadership tenure, Mr. Newman established the highly successful Elective Orthopaedic Unit, which consistently achieved the highest patient satisfaction scores in the trust. He also spearheaded an implant rationalisation initiative for hip and knee replacements, prioritising implants with proven track records from the National Joint Registry. This effort not only ensured the best outcomes for patients but also saved the NHS £500,000.

In February 2018, Mr. Newman assumed the role of Head of Clinical Service for Trauma and Orthopaedics at Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust. In this capacity, he oversees quality improvement initiatives, financial management, business planning, and the response to adverse incidents. He is also introducing a Virtual Fracture Clinic to further enhance patient care and efficiency.

Mr. Newman’s medical journey began at Manchester University, where he graduated in 1999. He spent five years training across various surgical specialties in Manchester before moving to Yorkshire in 2005 to join the Specialist Registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Yorkshire and Humber NHS Foundation Trust. This period of advanced training enabled him to develop a keen interest in sports injuries, knee injuries, and the treatment of knee pain, particularly in younger patients experiencing disabling pain from degenerative conditions.

In 2010, Mr. Newman further honed his expertise by undertaking a specialist knee surgery fellowship in Sheffield. His dedication to advancing knee surgery and improving patient outcomes has made him a leader in his field, renowned for his compassionate care and innovative approach.

Mr Newman gives clinical opinion in a relational style. He’s supportive and pragmatic. My ACL reconstruction seems to be heading in the right direction 3 months in. I’ve had good physio support to help me do my own work towards recovery.

I had a partial knee replacement operation at Spire Methley Park on the 24th February 2026. From the moment that I was checked in by the reception staff,to being escorted to my private room in preparation for my operation,I was given such lovely & pleasant welcome.I was informed by a nurse exactly what preparations had to be done and also what would happen both during and after the procedure. All of my queries were answered very professionally. When I was taken down I was greated by the anaesthetists who went through all of the pre op checks and also told me exactly what they would be doing with regards to the general anaesthetic. My operation went very well,Mr James Newman has been fantastic all of the way through the consultations, pre op assessment and finally in the operation itself. He is the epitome of a consummate professional surgeon. My knee operation will definitely give me a far better quality of life moving forwards once all of my rehab has been completed. John who has been my physio has certainly helped me with my rehabilitation,he gave me lots of great advice and also exercises and stretches that would help my recovery process. I cannot thank the whole team at Spire Methley Park for their care, treatment and also how my operation was conducted.

Could not be happier with the outcome of my knee replacement. It’s wasn’t something that I expected to have done at 51years of age but being mostly pain free now has been a life changer for me. From being in constant agony to walking 1000’s of daily steps! Thank you Mr Newman.

My whole experience was excellent! All my questions were answered in depth so I knew exactly what to expect from the surgery and the recovery ahead. The surgery itself was a positive experience with minimal swelling or pain so I was very happy with everything Dr Newman did for me... Thank you!!
