Mr Emad Shenouda is a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon based at Southampton University Hospital, widely recognised for his extensive expertise in both routine and highly complex spinal conditions. He graduated from medical school in 1991 and completed his specialist neurosurgical training at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, followed by advanced fellowships in spinal surgery and skull base surgery in Bristol and Manchester. This comprehensive training prepared him for his consultant appointment in Southampton in 2006, where he has since developed one of the region’s leading spinal practices.
Mr Shenouda’s clinical work spans the full spectrum of spinal surgery, from the management of common conditions such as lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis and cervical degenerative disease, to the treatment of spinal trauma, tumours and disorders of the craniocervical junction. He performs more than 250–300 spinal operations every year, offering minimally invasive techniques for lumbar and cervical disc problems, as well as advanced reconstructive procedures. He is highly experienced in motion-preserving techniques, including cervical and lumbar arthroplasty, and has performed more than seventy-five cervical disc replacements without complication.
His accredited fellowship in the orthopaedic spinal unit in Bristol provided him with a rare dual perspective in both neurosurgical and orthopaedic approaches to spinal pathology, enriching his diagnostic accuracy and operative planning. Alongside his spinal work, he also specialises in skull base surgery, working in close collaboration with ENT, maxillofacial and oncology colleagues. As Chairman of the Skull Base MDT, he manages a wide range of skull base conditions and has a particular interest in endoscopic-assisted techniques.
Mr Shenouda plays a significant role in education and training at the Wessex Neurological Centre. He leads the academic programme for Neurosciences, organises the Specialist Registrar teaching programme and is an examiner for both FRCS Neurosurgery and the School of Medicine in Southampton. He contributes to the FRCS question-writing group and serves on the national Specialty Advisory Committee in Neurosurgery.

Dr Emad Shenouda has been excellent from the first meeting all the way through to checking on me after operation. Both me and family members felt assured by Dr Shenouda which was important to me. All staff at Spire, Southampton were very good throughout my stay.
I cannot comment on the operation but I was very happy to have Mr Shenouda operate on me, he has a very comforting and reassuring bedside manner. However I feel that there could have been a more thorough briefing on the effects I would be felling post operation. This would I imagine been provided by support staff. Whilst I was feeling good in the day after the operation and in the morning after that, since leaving the hospital by condition seems have deteriorated, which may just be the after effect of the operatio catching up with me. There is one issue Ihave with the hospital staff and that is the lack of concern about the fact that I was becoming seriously constipated and ended up having to have an aenenama, which was entirely avoildable. There seems to be a rigid control on the issue of medication, which proved to be unhelpful. Once home and in conversation with my GP, the matter was sorted by using the right dosage of the relevant medication.
I have reasonably complex medical needs with Degenerative Spine Disease, Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and (Borderline) Type 2 Diabetes. Mr Shenouda had previously operated on my C3/C4 (Anterior Discectomy with fusion) in 2017. I had no hesitation in contacting him again with spinal issues in 2021 and again 2 months ago after losing feeling in the front of both legs. Under his excellent care in July 2026 he carried out a further operation successfully on L3/L4 and L4/L5 spinal canal stenosis and lumbar decompression. I am delighted with the results and now have full mobility, strength and sensation in both legs. I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending this excellent surgeon and caring man for any issues involving neuro or spinal conditions. He is also surrounded by an excellent team who support his patients at every stage of the process, be it Anesthetists, PA, nurses, pre-op assessments or theatre staff. I am immensely grateful to him and his team. Thank you

Thanks Mr Shenouda for my first consultation - happy with the next steps.
I found Mr Shenouda welcoming and easy to talk to. I was referred to radiology for treatment which also went well. His Secretarial support is efficient and friendly.
Mr Shenuda made me feel very comfortable from the moment I met him. He listened to me and gave me his diagnosis clearly and in particular, made me feel safe and full of confidence in his advice and the way to move forward. I highly recommend Mr Shenuda.
