Mr David Smith

Mr David Smith is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and surgical management of colorectal conditions, including both benign and malignant disease. He trained on the Manchester Higher Surgical Training Programme and completed an Ethicon-sponsored Fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

His specialist practice focuses on colorectal cancer surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal procedures, and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways designed to support faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. He has particular expertise in the management of early rectal cancer and polyps and performs transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) for selected patients.

Mr Smith treats a wide range of colorectal conditions including colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as proctological conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fissures, and anal fistulas. He offers a variety of haemorrhoid treatments, including rubber band ligation, haemorrhoidal artery ligation (HALO/THD), stapled haemorrhoidectomy, open haemorrhoidectomy, and the Rafaelo procedure.

He is also an experienced endoscopist, performing gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy, with more than 500 colonoscopy procedures undertaken each year across his NHS and private practice. He performs over 60 major colorectal procedures annually in both elective and emergency settings.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Smith is actively involved in surgical education and training. He is a member of the Health Education North West Specialty Training Committee for higher surgical trainees and received an Excellence in Training Award from Health Education North West in 2016. He also contributes as an endoscopy trainer, supporting the development of future surgeons and endoscopists.
