I qualified at The London Hospital, Whitechapel in 1980 and did my junior surgical training at Stoke Mandeville, Whipps Cross and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. After a two year spell in paediatric urology research in Cambridge looking at reflux my higher urology training was a year in Norwich and three years in Oxford
From 1994 to the present I have been a consultant urologist at Lister Hospital, Stevenage where our department has grown from two to nine. I have been lead clinician for thee spells and we are now a subregional centre for urological cancer and offer a broad range of sub specialist expertise in other branches of urology. My particular interest over the years has been renal and adrenal surgery, open and laparoscopic. Since 2017 I have passed on the major surgery to my new colleague and now do mainly clinics and minor and intermediate surgery to support the department and would call myself a general urologist
I served on our national organisation BAUS for five years in total, three as regional representative and two as a trustee. I have a small role in the University of Hertfordshire mentoring a PhD student and have contributed to the urological literature with original papers. For eight years I was part of a European Guidelines Group looking at the management of Renal Cell Cancer
Outside medicine I follow cricket and golf and enjoy music and the theatre
