About Mr Christopher Brew

Mr. Christopher Brew is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Hip and Knee surgery. He was appointed at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2011 and also works as part of a private group of specialist hip and knee surgeons carrying out private treatment at The Yorkshire Clinic, Bingley. Mr. Brew maintains a busy practice including a full trauma commitment with an interest in periprosthetic fracture management and complex acetabular reconstruction using personalised 3D printed implants.

Mr. Brew studied Medicine at St Andrews University and the University of Manchester, completing his specialist Orthopaedic training in Yorkshire, going on to complete two Hip and Knee Joint Replacement Fellowships, one national (Leeds) and one international (Brisbane, Australia), gaining extensive experience in revision (re-do) surgery and in computer-aided knee surgery. Following the award of multiple competitive Research Fellowships (ARC Research Fellowship, Action Research and Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship), Mr. Brew completed an extensive period of research into osteoarthritis, improving the understanding its causes. This work was published in internationally renowned journals and has been presented at international meetings, resulting in the award of a Doctorate in Medicine by the University of Manchester.

Mr. Brew continues his interest outside of his clinical work in teaching both medical students and junior doctors and is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for several junior doctors in training and teaches on local and national courses. He is also the Elective Orthopaedic Speciality lead at the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with an interest in improving safety, efficiency, and effectiveness in theatres.

This was my second total knee replacement, six months after the first. I am 58 years old and had been struggling with arthritic knees for around 10 years until I was having difficulty walking, sleeping and carrying out everyday activities. It is only six weeks post my second op but already I have seen major improvements. I think the best advice is to keep exercising regularly both pre and post op to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee and gain as much flexion as possible. The first month post op I found quite challenging each time, mainly because I struggled to sleep for more than around 90 minutes at a time before I needed to get up to walk around to ease stiffness. The overall experience at the Yorkshire Clinic was excellent on each occasion. Facilities were good and all staff members were friendly and helpful.

Very professional, kind and caring Consultant and all of his team. Also staff from Outpatients to the whole team on ward 14. Can't thank them all enough. Follow up physio I understand has had funding withdrawn but I feel this would have been beneficial.

I think it helped that I maintained a good level of fitness before the operation and then stuck rigidly to the exercises advised by the physio. I was naturally apprehensive and anxious before the operation, but due to the attentiveness of all the medical professionals, I felt relaxed going into the operation. I am totally satisfied with my post operative care and would advise anybody needing the operation to go ahead. My thanks again to ever one involved.

Twelve months ago I had what I now understand was a very difficult operation on my right knee. Apparently my knee had become mis aligned and also had turned inwards making walking very painful. However when my surgeon viewed the very recent Xray he was delighted to see that my knee is now completely straight and I am able to walk without pain and there isn't even a scar.So it.was absolutely worthwhile having the operation when I did.

My hip replacement surgery was something of a miracle for me. The problem I had resulted in a fairly painful and rapid decline in my mobility. Mr Brew was able to take me on privately and quickly provide me with a date for surgery before all my mobility went. Surgery went well as did recovery and I am delighted that I am fully fit and my mobility as good as it was previously. In fact I was surprised at how quickly I recovered my strength and I was able to walk again. It is a well researched and practised field and I would have no fear about more such surgery should I need it.
