About Professor Bhaskar Somani
Professor Somani is a Consultant Urologist at Southampton University and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He has a wealth of experience both as an urologist and in academia, as a lecturer and researcher. He is a specialist in minimally invasive surgical techniques.
His main specialist interest is the management of kidney stone disease. He also has expertise in benign prostate conditions, urinary tract infections and general urology. He runs the a regional stone service including specialist stone clinic, multidisciplinary team meetings, operating list and regional lithotripsy service. With such a high volume of procedures, he performs on average around 200 endoscopic ureteric or renal procedures per year. Having performed more than 3500 ureteroscopy procedures, Prof Somani has a stone-free rat of 96% for his patients, 4% of minor complications and 80% of patients discharged on the same day. Prof. Somani has experience in all types of stone diseases - emergency, elective complex and bilateral. He is one of a few who are licensed to perform ultra-mini PCNLs for large renal stones.
Prof Somani has written multiple articles and book chapters including a pioneering article on upper tract PDD using oral 5ALA for upper urinary tract tumour diagnosis. His research focused on many aspects of urology such as urinary tract tumour analysis, testicular torsion, erectile dysfunction and many more.He has published 750+ paper and written 15 book chapters.
Due to his expertise and passion for teaching, Prof Somani has been recognised and awarded by the Associates of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and European Urology Residents Education Programme.
Moreover, he is actively involved in spreading awareness about the symptoms of urological problems, amongst various media channels.
