I was born and bred in the Midlands and have returned to work as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Warwickshire after extensive training in the UK and abroad.
I graduated from Bristol Medical School in 1998 having also spent time studying in Strasbourg at the University of Louis Pasteur and at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. I completed my basic surgical training at Bristol Royal Infirmary including six months working at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Australia. I worked with the Exeter Hip Team as part of my higher surgical training. I was awarded the Cutner Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2008 to undertake a fellowship in complex hip and knee surgery in Canada before returning to Warwick.
My main interests are in the treatment of complex hip and knee problems. I am an expert in minimally invasive surgery and in treating active patients who wish to recover quickly from surgery.

Mr Andrew Shepherd is consistently clear, professional, and reassuring with patients. He takes time to explain procedures and expectations, fostering patient confidence from consultation through to post-operative care. Patients report excellent surgical outcomes for both hip and knee replacements, noting rapid pain relief and improved mobility. The care provided is frequently praised for leading to a successful patient journey focused on Hip Replacement.
My reasoning for initially contacting Mr Shepherd was due to his experience in the use of the Mako robotic system with hip replacement. From initial consultation to my final meeting 7 weeks post operation where I am pain free and have 100% mobility I am not disappointed with my choice of Consultant and would certainly both use again and recommend Mr Shepherd to others.
After suffering from a misdiagnosed hip for many years my father persuaded me to visit Mr Shepherd to have a look at my leg which I had convinced myself couldn't be the problem as I had been told repeatedly there was nothing wrong with me and I was getting better, despite not being able to walk without crutches for 9 years. Mr Shepherd observed my abnormal gait, listened to me and advised me to have an MRI scan which revealed degenerative arthritis in both of my hips. Mr Shepherd suggested to me I should have a cortisone injection in the most affected hip. After receiving the injection it had an immediate and noticeable effect on my gait which improved dramatically. With my foot going heel to toe for the first time in many years although my gait wasn't normal there was a vast improvement. Subsequently I visited Mr Shepherd and although there had been a huge improvement after the injection I still needed crutches to get about. Mr Shepherd advised me although I was relatively young to be having a hip replacement and I could persevere with cortisone I would need my hip replaced fully eventually. Taking Mr Shepherd's advice I decided not to put off the inevitable and was fortunate enough to have the operation sooner rather than later. All the staff at the Nuffield were brilliant, very efficient. When I had my pre op physio assessment I was asked what I would like to achieve from the operation. My answer was quite simple: I wanted to be able to walk. Ten weeks after the operation I am able to walk unaided for short distances and have full confidence I will be able to...

I had an excellent experience from start to finish. The surgeon took the time to explain the procedure clearly and answered all of my questions, which made me feel reassured. The nursing staff were kind, professional, and attentive throughout my care. My surgery went smoothly, and my recovery has been better than I expected. I’m very grateful to the whole team for their expertise and compassionate care.
An extremely personable individual, who took time to discuss the matter in detail. His bedside manner was impeccable and I can highly recommend his services.
After my new hip I was pain free in 3 days and back at my desk job in under a week. I was walking without the crutches in under four weeks. Excellent.
Very helpful and answer all my questions and explain full what. Need to do for best results
Excellent experience from start to finish provided by Mr Shepherd I thought I had damaged my back in some way but Mr Shepherd explained that because my right hip was so bad it was effecting the way I was standing which subsequently gave me back pain. He fixed my hip and the back pain went away immediately. Thank you.
From my first visit, I felt in total confidence with Mr Shepherd. He explained my options clearly, he discussed my choices giving clear explanations. The operation itself went smoothly, with great support from Mr Shepherd and his team. The outcome is fantastic and the entire journey was stress free and extremely well managed. Thank you!
6 week check. Excellent outcome. Pain free and mobilising well. Advice given on what to expect over next 6 weeks and all questions answered succinctly regarding movements to avoid, sleeping posture and sensations in hip on walking.
