I was born and bred in the Midlands and have returned to work as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Warwickshire after extensive training in the UK and abroad.
I graduated from Bristol Medical School in 1998 having also spent time studying in Strasbourg at the University of Louis Pasteur and at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. I completed my basic surgical training at Bristol Royal Infirmary including six months working at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Australia. I worked with the Exeter Hip Team as part of my higher surgical training. I was awarded the Cutner Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2008 to undertake a fellowship in complex hip and knee surgery in Canada before returning to Warwick.
My main interests are in the treatment of complex hip and knee problems. I am an expert in minimally invasive surgery and in treating active patients who wish to recover quickly from surgery.

Mr Andrew Shepherd is professional, clear, and attentive with patients. He delivers excellent hip and knee replacement outcomes. Patients gain fast mobility, less pain, and quickly return to activities. Main patient feedback highlights successful hip and knee procedures.
6 week check. Excellent outcome. Pain free and mobilising well. Advice given on what to expect over next 6 weeks and all questions answered succinctly regarding movements to avoid, sleeping posture and sensations in hip on walking.
Superb. Really valued the explanation about the Op I had had, the recovery expectations and the best way forward . I had this before the Op and after so my expectations were really well managed. Just what one wants from their consultant. Thank you!!
My experience was seamless from start to finish. Andrew supported me fully with the facts that enabled me to make the decision on the operation. He visited me before and after the operation in hospital, to make sure I was okay and it was a real comfort to see him before the operation with plenty of assurances about the procedure. What made the experience exceptional was Andrew’s ability to listen to me, empathise and help me to have the best outcome overall. I can’t thank him enough.
Understanding, explaining very clearly, comes over as very confident which is reassuring.
I certainly could have done with help from the hospital as regards aids I would need when I went home from the operation. Also the physio didn’t actually ‘do’ anything other than re assure me that I wasn’t doing anything wrong and seemingly could have been done via video rather than two hospital visits.
I found Mr Shephard personable empathetic and a good listener. The whole experience was very positive
From first consultation to completion of the operation, discharge from the hospital and the follow ups appointments all was very professional and completed successfully. I opted for the robotic option. I had very little pain when I came round and continued without pain. The plaster was taken off the wound after two weeks. It had healed well. I applied moisturiser to gel the scar to heal and there is minimal scarring. After 5 weeks I was walking without crutches and driving. A great success and kudos to the surgeon.
