About Mr Andrew Port
Mr. Andrew Port is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with more than 33 years in the field, specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty. Over the course of his career, he has been at the forefront of major developments in orthopaedic surgery, including computer-assisted navigated knee surgery and, more recently, robotic-assisted hip and knee replacements. His expertise spans soft tissue knee reconstruction, as well as both primary and complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty.
Mr. Port has pioneered enhanced recovery pathways designed to enable patients to achieve faster rehabilitation following joint replacement surgery. He currently serves as Chair of the Surgical Collaborative at James Cook University Hospital and also leads the development of the new Friarage Surgical Hub. In addition to his clinical work, he contributes extensively to medical education and leadership as Lead Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons Far East examinations, examiner assessor, and member of the Specialty Surgical Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Based at the BMI Woodlands Hospital in Darlington for over two decades and the Duchy hospital Harrogate he performs more than 500 hip and knee replacements annually, including 50 revision surgeries and 80 partial knee replacements. These figures significantly exceed national recommendations for maintaining surgical standards, and his outcomes consistently rank among the highest nationally for patient satisfaction and lowest complication rates.
As one of the first surgeons in the UK to adopt robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery, Mr. Port has performed over 300 procedures using the Stryker Mako Robotics system. This advanced technology combines 3D planning with precise intraoperative reconstruction, offering patients reduced pain, faster recovery, and improved long-term function.

Mr Port carried out a robotic assisted total knee replacement for me. From start to finish he was very professional explaining the procedure in full at each phase putting my mind at ease and giving me full confidence in his ability. He visited me after surgery to explain how everything had gone and my recovery process. The procedure has been a total success and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing knee surgery in the future.
It was the so relaxed experience by the team of MR Port I couldn't believe how the recovery from my knee replacement with no pain whatsoever walking about without aids from the second day. Had my 1st physio 1 week later then discharged at my second visit my wife couldn't believe how quickly I have recovered. I was walking my dog up to a mile every day cut my lawn within 2weeks I just feel amazing & looking forward to have my other knee done by him in the near future.
I saw Mr Port as I had recently injured myself in a fall. I wanted to check that there was no damage to my hip replacement which was carried out some 22 years ago. He reviewed my MRI scan and arranged X-rays. All in all a thorough examination.

Mr Port identified my issue by the time I had walked across his office and sat down! He agreed to leave me a few weeks to consider his proposal of a knee replacement, but correctly predicted that I would want the surgery. It is not easy to assess the quality of the surgery until a few weeks have passed, but I feel as though my progress is ahead of expectations and recovery has been good.
Everything ran smoothly and on time with a swift outcome.
