Mr. Andrew Port is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with more than 33 years in the field, specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty. Over the course of his career, he has been at the forefront of major developments in orthopaedic surgery, including computer-assisted navigated knee surgery and, more recently, robotic-assisted hip and knee replacements. His expertise spans soft tissue knee reconstruction, as well as both primary and complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty.
Mr. Port has pioneered enhanced recovery pathways designed to enable patients to achieve faster rehabilitation following joint replacement surgery. He currently serves as Chair of the Surgical Collaborative at James Cook University Hospital and also leads the development of the new Friarage Surgical Hub. In addition to his clinical work, he contributes extensively to medical education and leadership as Lead Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons Far East examinations, examiner assessor, and member of the Specialty Surgical Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Based at the BMI Woodlands Hospital in Darlington for over two decades and the Duchy hospital Harrogate he performs more than 500 hip and knee replacements annually, including 50 revision surgeries and 80 partial knee replacements. These figures significantly exceed national recommendations for maintaining surgical standards, and his outcomes consistently rank among the highest nationally for patient satisfaction and lowest complication rates.
As one of the first surgeons in the UK to adopt robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery, Mr. Port has performed over 300 procedures using the Stryker Mako Robotics system. This advanced technology combines 3D planning with precise intraoperative reconstruction, offering patients reduced pain, faster recovery, and improved long-term function.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr. Port plays a key role in shaping orthopaedic care across the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire, working to standardise the delivery and quality of surgical services. His leadership, pioneering approach, and extensive surgical expertise have established him as a national authority in hip and knee replacement surgery.

Everything ran smoothly and on time with a swift outcome.
Mr Port gave me an easy to understand explanation and was very patient. I was very satisfied with my consultation.
Mr Port was very polite and obviously an expert in his field. Everything fully explained and made very clear. Completely put me at ease about the whole procedure.
I was reviewing an mri on my knee. Mr port explained in simple language what the problem was. He was able to assess my distress and advised that I take my time to think about my options. This was wise advice because now that I have thought about my situation I’m thinking very differently about my options and I’ve had time to consult with my physio and doctor the get thier advice. I feel much more informed to make a decision
I had an appointment within 2 weeks. Was seen on time in clinic. Easy to park. Staff pleasant and helpful. Very clear and useful explanation advice and clinical opinion given.
I can fully recommend Mr Port combined with his patient reassuring manner taking time to explain various options and the wonderful advance of Robotic Surgery he highly recommended. I had a Total knee replacement and he and his surgical Team were excellent. My scar is very fine and is healing fast combined with intensive physiotherapy my Recovery is ongoing.
Mr Port explained the procedure and what followed - this was clear and precise and left me with a good understanding of what I was to expect. He explained how he would use the robotic arm to assist with the procedure and the benefits of its use. My speedy recovery and ‘bend’ [knee bend quickly recovers to well beyond 90 degrees and now I have more flexibility than some who have not had a knee replacement] was an indication of how accurate his synopsis was.
I had a hip replacement. After 5 weeks I am pain free, able to perform most household tasks and walk a couple of miles. As I walked with two sticks and took powerful painkillers before the operation the contrast is astonishing.
A robotically assisted total knee replacement, including patella, various challenges. Mr. Port replaced a hip for me 9 years ago, with superb results, and has done procedures for a couple of friends, so there really was no other choice. Three previous large surgeries on the same knee and a failed carbon fiber gave Mr Port a proper mess to deal with. My recovery has been almost miraculous, and 8 weeks post op I am pain-free, with a straight knee and super flexion, and the neatest scar. I honestly don't have the words to describe my appreciation for the skills of this surgeon. Honestly, couldn't recommend him highly enough
