Mr. Van den Bossche is a pioneer of the Fobi ring in the UK, which is a device that can be placed around the gastric pouch or gastric sleeve to minimise the risk of weight gain years after surgery. He is a specialist laparoscopic surgeon and offers a range of procedures, including hernia repair, gallbladder removal, and anti-reflux surgery. His signature procedure is the LINX operation, which is a simple treatment for heartburn and reflux using a bracelet with magnetic beads placed at the end of the oesophagus.
Mr. Van den Bossche gained his medical degree in 1989 and began performing obesity surgery in 1995 in Belgium. He was trained by Dr Jacques Himpens, who is the current president of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity. In 1999, he moved to the Channel Islands and, in 2005, implemented the bariatric surgery service at the Spire Hospital in Southampton together with Mr. Ian Bailey.

I have recently spent a significant amount of time in hospital in Guernsey during which Mr Van Den Bossche performed two life saving surgeries on me. These surgeries would normally have been carried out in Southampton but due to my poor condition, decisions were made to perform the surgery in Guernsey. Mr Van Den Bossche visited me at my bedside at least once a day during my stay and kept in contact with my wife by phone during those critical times. He always provided us with clear explanations of the surgical and other procedures I underwent and his overall approach to patient care was exemplary. He also showed great empathy towards me, my wife and my family members whenever he encountered them at the hospital, something which makes him stand out from many other physicians. He made me feel like I was the most important patient in the hospital, filled me and my family with positivity, and I truly believe I would never have made it through without him. He is truly dedicated to his work and I have no doubt I owe my life to him. There can’t be many patients in this world who would say that they miss their surgeon following their discharge from hospital but I am one of them.
