Dr Mohammed Sakel

Dr Mohamed Sakel is a senior Consultant in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine with more than 30 years of clinical experience in complex neurological rehabilitation. He is currently Medical Director and Consultant Physician at Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Bristol, a specialist Level 1 neurorehabilitation service. Before moving to Frenchay in 2025, he held senior consultant and leadership roles across the NHS, including more than two decades directing neurorehabilitation services in East Kent.

His clinical work centres on patients with acquired brain injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and complex neurological disability. He has particular expertise in spasticity management, Botulinum Toxin treatment, neuromodulation, neurotechnology and rehabilitation robotics, combining conventional rehabilitation medicine with emerging technology to improve function and quality of life. Research has been a major component of Dr Sakel’s career. He has led and collaborated on more than 20 clinical trials, with work spanning brain injury, stroke, spasticity, multiple sclerosis, robotics, neuromodulation and brain-computer interfaces. His research portfolio has attracted substantial funding, and he has published extensively in international medical literature.

Dr Sakel’s practice reflects a multidisciplinary and function-focused approach to rehabilitation, combining medical management with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology, technology and long-term rehabilitation planning. His focus is not only on treating neurological impairment but also on helping patients regain independence, participation and meaningful quality of life following complex neurological injury or disease.
