I am a consultant Clinical Oncologist, specialising in adult brain tumours. Most of my private work is at The London Clinic, where I chair the neuro-oncology MDT.
My NHS practice is based at Charing Cross Hospital, and I lead the Computational Oncology group at Imperial College.
My main clinical focus is on the development and clinical introduction of better treatments for brain tumour patients, with a focus on patient support.
I have led the introduction of Optune (Tumour-treating fields) for GBM in the UK and implemented the routine use of combined TMZ/Lomustine chemotherapy for patients with MGMT-methylated GBM - both treatments that are widely used in other countries. I have also published on the use of stereotactic radiotherapy for patients with more than 10 brain metastases.
I work with two German groups (CEGAT/CECAVE and IOZK) to help patients access novel immunotherapies, and work closely with a US oncologist (Michael Castro) to try and deliver novel treatment approaches for patients in the UK.
For patients who are interested in an appointment, I would suggest looking at HINO.org.uk which covers additional and novel treatments for brain tumour patients; for those interested in Optune (Tumour-treating Fields), please visit OptuneSupport.uk
Much of our research focuses on understanding care and outcomes at a national scale, and using digital technologies in neuro-oncology. In that context I led the Brain Wear and BrainApp trials, and am leading the BrainWear2 study. I also lead the Beat-BREAST trial, looking at novel radiotherapy approaches for patients with brain metastases.
I am currently President of the Bristish Radiosurgery Society. I have previously chaired the QI and Audit committee of the RCR, been a Macmillan Data Advisor and was the Clinical lead for QA at NCRAS.

We first consulted Dr Williams shortly after my husband’s glioblastoma diagnosis. After receiving little guidance beyond standard treatment, speaking to him was a breath of fresh air. He was clear about the options available, the importance of acting promptly, and helped us access the treatment and advice we needed at an extremely difficult time. We returned to him when my husband recently developed suspected recurrence and had the same experience. He is exceptionally knowledgeable, clear and pragmatic, but also open-minded about personalised treatments and clinical trials. We came away understanding our options and, most importantly, with a plan. We are extremely grateful to have Dr Williams involved in my husband’s care.
Matt has been instrumental in helping me and my family fully understand th nature and range of treatment available to me both on the NHS and privately. He has taken time to explain clearly the existing clinical data behind treatment options, and how different treatments can or might be combined or pursued in parallel. he follows closely clinical trials underway in the UK and overseas and has been ready to engage helpfully in making referrals as necessary. He is clear in how he sets out options and possible courses of action, helping me understand pros and cons
I am very grateful that Dr Williams was recommended to me for a second opinion. His communication has been outstanding. And he has been willing to discuss and explore non standard treatments alongside recommending the best treatment available to me. Indeed he recommended and facilitated treatment that was not available with my previous oncologist.
Dr Williams gave us a most positive experience, from our very first visit. No talk of how many months prognosis etc... Only that we have several options available and gave us clear information how to and who to, get in touch with! And got the necessary documents etc to the right people. He has been with us every step of the way, in touch with the doctors in Germany and ALWAYS available for ANY questions!!
Dr Williams is extremely personable and takes time to explain things in a way that is very helpful to the patient who may be still coming to terms with their diagnosis. I had some doubts about treatment options that had been proposed to me via previous health facilities and Dr Williams made me aware of other treatment options that could offer further benefit to me. I feel that with Dr Williams I am being treated as an individual patient rather than a statistic and this is both refreshing and important to me.
Dr Matt Williams is my go-to referral for anyone with a brain tumour. He's a neuro-oncology specialist with an international profile, chairs an MDT I attend regularly, and consistently offers excellent clinical opinion and care to his patients. I recommend him without reservation.
