Dr Matthew Ryan is a consultant interventional cardiologist at St Thomas’ Hospital and a senior lecturer at King’s College London, with recognised expertise in both general and interventional cardiology. As a general cardiologist at St Thomas’s (rated the UK’s best hospital by Newsweek in 2024) he cares for patients with a wide range of heart conditions, including angina, arrhythmias, heart failure, and syncope, both in outpatient and emergency settings.
His subspecialty is in interventional cardiology, where he performs advanced procedures such as angioplasty and coronary stenting, particularly in complex and high-risk cases referred from across South London and Kent. He also has an interest in coronary physiology, intracoronary imaging and microvascular angina.
Dr Ryan completed his medical degree at the University of Leeds in 2010, graduating with an award for the top performance in finals. After general medical training at UCLH and the Royal Free Hospital, he completed his specialist cardiology training at St Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College Hospital. He was awarded a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine from King’s College London in 2021.
As a senior lecturer at King’s College London, Dr Ryan is highly active in research. His research focusses on the relationship between coronary artery disease and heart failure, as well as improving the safety of coronary artery stenting in complex or high-risk cases. He has a particular interest in clinical trials.
Dr Ryan has published research in top tier medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, European Heart Journal, Circulation and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He was a member of faculty for both the European Society of Cardiology and American College of Cardiology Congresses in 2024, presenting the results of major studies at both meetings.
In 2024 Dr Ryan was awarded a prestigious Advanced Fellowship by the National Institute for Health Research and Medical Research Council. The award included £2.8 million to improve our understanding of how coronary artery disease causes heart failure. He is committed to using research to advance patient care and improve the lives of patients with cardiovascular disease.
As a caring and empathetic physician, Dr. Ryan aims to empower his patients through clear communication and tailored treatment plans. He is now offering private consultations for those seeking expert cardiac care in a comfortable and confidential setting.

Dr. Matthew Ryan provides an excellent and reassuring experience for patients, offering clear explanations and making interactions easy. He is thorough and professional, taking time to understand individual concerns and review risk factors for various heart-related issues. Patients report receiving clear conclusions about test results and good advice on how to proceed with their care. These often involve cardiac screening, investigations for chest pain, and procedures such as ECG (Electrocardiogram), 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, stress echocardiograms, and exercise stress tests.
I was recently referred to Matthew for some suspected heart-related issues, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. From the moment the consultation began, he was incredibly reassuring. He took the time to explain everything in a way that was easy to understand, which really helped settle my nerves. I felt completely at ease throughout the entire process and left feeling confident in the next steps for my care.
I had an excellent experience with Dr Ryan: he was courteous, patient and extremely thorough. I couldn't recommend him more highly.
Dr Ryan has given very clear explanations of my diagnosis and the way forward, and has organised tests with the necessary codes to make dealing with Aviva as easy as possible. Dr Ryan also made himself available for the initial visit very quickly after my initial work health screening, despite the holiday season approaching, and has been consistently quick at speaking to me about results and next actions, and drafting letters confirming these. Monica has also been incredibly helpful, organising appointments, codes, changing dates, etc, sometimes replying late into the evening to ensure the appointments / insurance details could be organised as quickly as possible.
Dr Ryan was easy to talk to, extremely professional and skilled in his approach; he was a huge reassurance at a time that may otherwise have been very stressful for my partner and me. He resolved and answered all our questions and concerns; we are very grateful.
Dr Ryan explained my condition in a clear and concise fashion and also answered my questions very well. I also received some very good advice on how to proceed. All in all, I could not have been more satisfied.
I was referred to Dr Ryan after a periodic physical. He was very thorough in reviewing the risk factors that sent me to him. He was also very assuring when sharing the results of the testing.
My experience of my consultation with Dr Ryan could not be faulted in any way, from my initial enquiry via his amazing, helpful personal secretary through to the consultation itself. Dr Ryan epitomised the principles of personalised, patient focussed clinical care. Informative and encouraging, he actively listened and responded to everything I needed to ask.
Easy location to find, friendly staff providing clear instructions, all on time, warm friendly welcome, felt listened too, very clear explanations. Thank you.
Dr Ryan very clearly joined the dots with respect to the outcome of my test results and shared a clear easily understandable conclusion with next steps.
