Mr Manara is a Consultant knee surgeon based in South Wales, he sees and treats patients across the Monmouth, Newport and Wye Valley areas as well as from further afield. He is triple fellowship trained and will see patients with all knee conditions. His NHS Consultant post is based in Aneurin Bevan University Hospitals.
Mr Manara graduated from the University of Nottingham Medical School and undertook his specialist orthopaedic training on the All Wales and Severn rotations, gaining his FRCS (Tr & Orth) in 2020. In 2025, he became only the second British surgeon to be awarded the prestigious ISAKOS Patellofemoral travelling fellowship, recognising a commitment to the treatment of patellofemoral (kneecap) disorders.
He completed international specialist fellowships covering all aspects of knee surgery. His soft tissue knee fellowship was at the world-renowned North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, working alongside A/Prof Justin Roe, where he treated elite athletes and large numbers of patients undergoing ACL reconstructions and meniscal surgery. Jonathan then undertook a joint replacement fellowship at the Perth Hip & Knee Clinic, training in robotic joint replacement and gained extensive experience in performing both total and partial knee replacements using a Mako robot. His final fellowship was at the Major Trauma Centre based at Royal Perth Hospital, managing a daily trauma operating list, treating complex cases transferred in from across Western Australia, including a large volume of patients with fractures and multi-ligament knee injuries.
Jonathan specialises in knee ligament reconstructions, meniscal repair, cartilage surgery, patella stabilisation and osteotomy procedures. He’s helped ‘weekend warriors’ return to the sports they enjoy and elite athletes to back national level sports teams.
In the treatment of arthritis, Jonathan is an advocate of unicompartmental (partial) knee replacements, which account for around half of all the joint replacements he performs. He has an interest in the benefits of ‘personalised alignment’ for improving outcomes in patients undergoing total knee replacements. This is an area of research he is involved in, publishing in prestigious peer reviewed journals.
In addition to knee surgery, Mr Manara consults for trauma, regularly carrying out fracture surgery.
At your initial consultation you will be given plenty of time to discuss your knee problem and to come up with a plan to investigate (often with an x-ray or MRI) and start treatment.
