Dr Irfan Hafeez

Dr Irfan Hafeez is an experienced Consultant Respiratory Physician who graduated in Lahore, Pakistan, before completing specialist training in Leeds. He was appointed to the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2001 and has since become a leading figure in respiratory medicine within the region.

Dr Hafeez currently serves as the clinical lead for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, running a dedicated difficult asthma clinic. He also leads the Trust’s tuberculosis and lung cancer services, providing expert diagnostic and therapeutic care for patients with complex respiratory conditions.

During his tenure as Clinical Director for Respiratory Medicine, Dr Hafeez was instrumental in developing several advanced specialist services, including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), a comprehensive sleep service, and medical thoracoscopy. His leadership has contributed significantly to improving respiratory care pathways and expanding specialist access for patients across East Lancashire.

His clinical interests span a wide range of respiratory disorders, including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Dr Hafeez is an active member of leading professional organisations, including the Royal College of Physicians, the British Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.
