About Mr Franscois Runau
Mr Francois Runau is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with extensive expertise in bowel cancer, early rectal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, abdominal wall reconstruction and the full range of hernia surgery. His practice is rooted in modern, minimally invasive techniques, and he places strong emphasis on laparoscopic and keyhole approaches to ensure safe procedures, faster recovery, and the best possible outcomes for his patients.
He also has specialist expertise in anorectal conditions, managing haemorrhoids, fistulas, anal fissures, pilonidal sinus disease and anal skin tags, with a particular interest in laser-based treatment options. In addition to his surgical work, he performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy.
Mr Runau graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School before completing his higher surgical and colorectal training across Leicester Hospitals, supplemented by fellowships in leading regional and European units. He has a strong academic background and has published widely in general and colorectal surgery. He was awarded a PhD in Cancer Treatment from the University of Leicester in 2019.

I recently underwent a large incisional hernia repair with Mr Runau and would definitely recommend him. From my first consultation, he took the time to explain the procedure, benefits, and potential risks in a way that was easy to understand. He was more than happy to answer all of my questions. The post-operative follow-up has been equally thorough. He is very professional, but empathetic and easy to talk to with a very reassuring manner. I had every confidence in him.
I have seen Dr Runau twice to date and he has been excellent - as an anxious person regarding potential surgery, he has the ability to instantly make me feel calm and at ease, and I would trust him 110% to operate on me. He is very thorough and explains everything well. He doesn’t make me feel rushed or against the clock in an appointment either, which I have experienced elsewhere. Would highly recommend!
