About Dr. Dulmini Kariyawasam
Dr Dulmini Kariyawasam, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetes Specialist, currently works within the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. She also sees patients privately in several London-based hospitals including HCA London Bridge/Shard, KIMs Sevenoaks Medical Centre, and Guy's and St. Thomas's Private Health. She has a wealth of experience in managing and treating diabetes (type 1 and 2) in adults, adolescents, and children including complications of diabetes and the management of hypoglycaemia. She also is highly specialised in endocrine disorders including those of the adrenal gland, thyroid, ovaries and testis, menstrual problems, PCOS, and growth and puberty problems.
Dr Kariyawasam graduated in 2000 with her undergraduate degree in medicine and surgery, before going on to do an MSc in Diabetes and Endocrinology at King's College London. Following this, she underwent her specialist training in the London Deanery. Following her training, she was given membership to the Royal College of Physicians and was later made a Fellow for the same institute. She is also a member of Diabetes UK and American Diabetes Association and Endocrine Society.
Dr Kariyawasam is an active member of the research community, publishing regularly in peer-reviewed journals. Throughout her career, she has been awarded several prizes for her work including the prestigious Niru-Goenka award of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists for innovative thinking. Alongside this award, the team that she works with has also won the HSJ award for the management of young adults with Type 1 diabetes.

The administrative handling of my appointment was SURPRISINLY unprofessional, particularly in relation to the secretary Georgia. Although I responded promptly with my availability for the video/telephone consultation, I never received confirmation of the appointment. On the day of the consultation, I emailed again to request the video link but received no response. When I called, I was told my emails had been missed and the appointment had never been confirmed, without any apology. The same thing happened AGAIN when I accepted an alternative slot later that day—my confirmation email was overlooked AGAIN, leaving me to chase for updates shortly before the appointment. In contrast, the doctor was professional throughout. My complaint relates solely to the administrative communication and organisation, which fell WAY below the standard I would expect.

On this occassion Dr Kariyawasams usual secretary was on leave and your appointments were being managed by a member of the team providing sickness cover. Unfortunately on this occassion your emails were overlooked, and we recognise this resulted in poor communication and unneccessary stress for you. We appreciate you highlighting these issues as this enables us to review our processes and ensure improvements are made to prevent this happening again. We are pleased to hear that your consultation with Dr Kariyawasam met your expectations, but we fully accept that administrative support you received fell short of the standard we strive to provide. Please accept our sincere apologies and thank you again for bringing this to our attention.
I have had a great experience with Dr Kariyawasam. She is professional, knowledgeable, and takes the time to listen to my concerns and explain everything clearly. I feel comfortable in my appointments with her and leave feeling confident in my treatment plan. The staff were also friendly and efficient, making the entire visit a positive experience.
