Dr Timothy Gatheral

Dr Tim Gatheral is a leading Consultant Respiratory Physician based in Preston, specialising in chronic cough, breathlessness, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and interstitial lung disease (ILD), including pulmonary fibrosis. He delivers private clinical care at the Greater Lancashire Hospital in Preston, and in York (private rooms in Elvington Medical Practice). He works as an  NHS consultant at  University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB) and  North Lancashire, South Cumbria Interstitial Lung Disease Service.

Dr Gatheral qualified in medicine from the University of Cambridge (MB BChir, 2002; MA, 1999) before completing postgraduate clinical training in London. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London in 2012 following advanced research conducted at the National Heart and Lung Institute and Royal Brompton Hospital. At his NHS base, he runs the specialist Interstitial Lung Disease clinic, with expert focus on Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a progressive fibrotic condition marked by tissue scarring between the lung air sacs.

A respected clinical leader and academic, Dr Gatheral serves as Director of Research and Development at UHMB, having previously held the position of Clinical Lead for Respiratory Medicine. He is a lead member of the Morecambe Bay Respiratory Network, Senior Clinical Lecturer at Lancaster Medical School, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He is a Principal Investigator for multiple academic and commer clinical research trials and is widely published in major peer-reviewed journals.
