Dr Sunil Iyengar

Dr Sunil Iyengar is a Consultant Haematologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of haematological malignancies, particularly lymphomas and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). He was appointed as a Consultant at the Royal Marsden in 2014 and also holds an honorary academic appointment at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London.

Following his medical training at Bangalore Medical College, India, Dr Iyengar completed specialist haematology training at University College Hospital, London, before undertaking doctoral research at Barts Cancer Institute, focusing on mantle cell lymphoma. His clinical practice combines specialist cancer care with an active interest in translational research, targeted therapies and advances in the treatment of blood cancers.

Dr Iyengar specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers, particularly chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. He provides comprehensive assessment and personalised treatment planning, including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and monoclonal antibody treatments where appropriate. His clinical practice also covers less common conditions such as Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia, hairy cell leukaemia and T-cell lymphoma, with treatment decisions guided by each patient's diagnosis, disease characteristics and individual needs.

Dr Iyengar has a strong academic interest in the biology, diagnosis and treatment of lymphoid malignancies. His research focuses on understanding the molecular characteristics of blood cancers, identifying mechanisms of resistance to targeted treatments and improving risk assessment to support more personalised patient management.

His research includes work on mantle cell lymphoma, B-cell malignancies and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. He has also participated as an investigator in clinical trials evaluating kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibody therapies. Through his academic affiliation with the Institute of Cancer Research, he contributes to research aimed at translating scientific discoveries into improved clinical care.

Dr Iyengar takes a considered and evidence-based approach to treating patients with blood cancers. He recognises that a diagnosis of leukaemia or lymphoma can be challenging for patients and their families, and places importance on explaining the diagnosis, discussing treatment options and helping patients understand the expected benefits and considerations of their care.
