About Dr Michael Stewart

Dr Stewart qualified as a consultant cardiologist and general physician in September 2003, having trained at the Wessex Cardiothoracic Centre, Southampton and at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London. After 21 years in the Royal Navy he became an NHS consultant in Portsmouth in 2005. His NHS practice covers all aspects of general cardiology including invasive and non invasive investigations. He has extensive experience in the investigation and managment of palpitations and blackouts, including atrial fibrillation and loss of consciouness, related to heart rhythm disorders requiring pacemaker implantation.He also specilaises in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiograpy for investigation of heart valve disease and heart murmurs. He aso provides investigation and treatment for  vasovagal syndrome and POTS

His main interests include

1.Investigation and management of palpitations and cardiac arrhythmia

2.  Heart Valve Disease investigation of heart murmurs by transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography

3. Implantation of pacemakers

4. Syncope/collapse

5 POTS/ vasovagal syndrome

6. Chest pain /Angina

7. Heart Failure

8. Shortness of breath

Dr Stewart completed research, and has published articles, into the investigation and management of Pulmonary Embolism.

Dr Stewart also consults on cardiovascular screening for recreational and professional diving, flying and occupational activities and advises on aspects of sports cardiology, including pre-participation screening and the cardiac aspects of endurance training.

Dr Stewart is a member of the Spire Medical Advisory Committe and is Chairman of the Portsmouth Hospitals Formulary and Medicines Committtee and is an adviser to the British National Formulary on Cardiovascular Pharmacology.
