Dr Kara Heelan

Dr Kara Heelan, Consultant Dermatologist, currently works within London at several private hospitals. She is highly specialised in the treatment of all aspects of dermatology including skin cancer as well as complex medical dermatology. She has a specific interest in drug reactions and autoimmune bullous dermatoses. General dermatology is also her forte including skin conditions, acne, rosacea, benign skin lesions, and inflammatory skin rashes.

Dr Heelan began her medical education at University College Dublin where she graduated in medicine with honours. She then went on to do her Higher Speciality Training in Dermatology in Ireland, where she won several prizes for her research. She won the highly coveted inaugural Sean O'Loughlin memorial gold medal for placing first on her national dermatology exam. She further developed her knowledge by undertaking the Advanced Medical Dermatology Fellowship at the University of Toronto, and a further fellowship at University College London Hospital focusing on skin cancer and dermatological surgery. During her training, she also undertook a research degree examining autoimmune bullous dermatoses, which resulted in her being awarded an MD from University College Cork.

Dr Heelan is an active researcher with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and several invites to present her findings at conferences around the world. She is also a member of the National Cancer Research Institute Skin Group and assists in developing guidelines within the British Association of Dermatologists guideline group for bullous pemphigoid.
