Dr Amit Patel

Dr Amit Patel is a Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine and Clinical Lead for Respiratory Medicine at King's College Hospital.

He assesses and treats adults with a broad range of respiratory symptoms and conditions. Patients commonly consult him about a persistent or chronic cough, unexplained breathlessness, shortness of breath, wheezing, asthma, recurrent respiratory infections or abnormal chest imaging. He also has a particular interest in sleep apnoea and sees patients experiencing loud or disruptive snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, unrefreshing sleep, and excessive daytime tiredness.

At King's College Hospital, Dr Patel is a member of the specialist sarcoidosis and interstitial lung disease team, caring for patients with sarcoidosis and connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung disease. The King's Sarcoidosis Clinic is recognised by WASOG as a Sarcoidosis Centre of Excellence.

Dr Patel understands that breathing difficulties, disturbed sleep and unexplained symptoms can have a considerable effect on daily life. His approach is thorough and patient-centred: he listens carefully, explains investigations and results in clear language, and develops an individual management plan with each patient. He also works closely with GPs and other specialists to provide coordinated care.

Dr Patel graduated from King's College London and completed his postgraduate training in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine at leading London teaching hospitals, including the Royal Brompton Hospital, King's College Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital.

During his higher specialist training, Dr Patel completed an MD in the Division of Asthma, Allergy and Lung Biology at King's College London. His research resulted in numerous publications in respiratory medicine and he continues to contribute in this field. He remains actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and holds postgraduate qualifications in medical education.

Alongside his clinical leadership role, Dr Patel is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King's College London, Training Programme Director for Respiratory Medicine in South Thames and Regional Specialty Adviser to the Royal College of Physicians.
