Dr Amit Chattree qualified from Bart's and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and undertook specialist gastroenterology training on the North East Thames Gastroenterology Training Programme. He worked at world leading centres such as University College Hospital London, St Bartholomew's Hospital and The Royal London Hospital gaining valuable expertise in treating the most complex gastrointestinal conditions.
Dr Chattree undertook an advanced endoscopy fellowship at the University Hospital of North Tees and completed an MD Thesis at Durham University with numerous publications. Dr Chattree is the lead author of the British Society of Gastroenterology Guidelines for the management of large colorectal polyps and also developed the world's first framework for the management of large polyps. He was awarded a British Society of Gastroenterology prize for his work in 2015.
Dr Chattree specialises in advanced therapeutic endoscopy with high quality outcomes. He is an accredited endoscopist for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and is a nationally recognised expert in small bowel endoscopy. He leads the small bowel department at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the main tertiary referral centre for double balloon enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy for the North East and Cumbria. He is also Course Director for the renowned Lumley Castle European Capsule Endoscopy Course and a faculty member for the Sheffield Capsule Endoscopy Course
Dr Chattree is often asked to provide a second opinion for complex cases. He sees a wide variety of gastroenterology and hepatology cases. He has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences and remains active in research.
