About Dr Amit Chattree

Dr Amit Chattree is a highly regarded Consultant Gastroenterologist currently practising at Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, and Newcastle Gastroenterology. He has extensive experience in managing a wide range of complex gastrointestinal and liver conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, gastrointestinal cancers, polyps, and complex abdominal pain. He is regularly sought after for second opinions and expert advice in challenging cases.  He oftens receives referrals for patient both nationally and internationally

Dr Chattree trained at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed specialist gastroenterology training through the North East Thames Programme. He completed an MD thesis at Durham University and undertook an advanced endoscopy fellowship at the University Hospital of North Tees. He is an expert in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, transnasal endoscopy, and both single and double-balloon enteroscopy. He also performs bowel cancer screening and complex polypectomy and is an accredited endoscopist for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

He leads the small bowel service at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, a regional tertiary referral centre for small bowel disease in the North East and Cumbria. He is also the Course Director of the Lumley Castle European Capsule Endoscopy Course and a faculty member of the Sheffield Capsule Endoscopy Course and the international teaching academy IRCAD. He is the national assessor for small bowel endoscopy and serves as the Royal College of Physicians’ national lead for small bowel capsule endoscopy certification.

Dr Chattree has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including the British Society of Gastroenterology Guidelines for the management of large colorectal polyps.  He also developed the world's first framework for their management. He was awarded a British Society of Gastroenterology prize in 2015 and continues to actively contribute to international research and medical education with regular publications and national and international invitations to prestigious meetings.

Visited Mr Chattree on short notice regarding an infection in the ileum which required a colonoscopy. Dr Chattree explained everything in detail and gave all the precautions needed before the treatment, and I had no problems following the treatment.

Dr Chattree is an excellent practitioner. My visit and subsequent endoscopy procedure was supportive and reassuring. Dr Chattree is an experienced professional who clearly wants to tailor treatment to his patients in the most effective, calm and effective way possible to investigate the cause of any concern. I was reassured by the tests recommended and further investigations into my issue that I was in the best hands possible.
