Wow, words alone couldn’t possibly express my gratitude towards Dr Westbroek. Since meeting him I have been blown away by his expertise, professionalism and treatment of me. From the beginning he has seen and treated me as a human, listened and put me and my needs first above all. Every decision made was given and made by me thanks to him. It was incredible to be given the control over my own treatment, which was always at the best of interest to myself. He utterly and completely showed full consideration of the mental and emotional aspect of my treatment. I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, and after tribulations with reconstruction options, I decided I didn’t want anyone else on this planet to manage and complete my surgery - single mastectomy to my right breast without reconstruction. Within a week of this decision Dr Westbroek had booked me in for surgery with him, just what I wanted. On the morning I felt totally at ease because I had complete trust in him. Before surgery, he came to see me on three occasions, the first, he explained every single step so thoroughly, and always included my family in opening the floor to questions or queries. The second, he directed me to the anaesthesia room, on the third he checked in to see if I was ok and said “see you in there”, I couldn’t wait. When I awoke out of anaesthesia he came to see me again, and I broke into tears with pure elation and thanks to him for taking out my cancer and saving my life. From first referral through admission & aftercare ,all was excellent..a breeze.

I recently attended a follow up appointment with Mr Westbroek regarding recent mamogram and implant surgery. The appointment was very positive, and I am overall satisfied with the care, communication, and delivery of the consultation. Mr Westbroke addressed my concerns clearly, and I am pleased with the outcome and follow-up provided.

My visit with mr David Westbrook was great I made all my decisions on the information mr Westbrook gave me on what would happen to me going forward. HOWEVER ? My last appointment was with a lady who was above mr Westbrook told me there wasn’t going to do my last operation after already having my pre-op assessment done I was told I would have to go privately and pay for a private plastic surgeon to make my breasts the same size which before I had anything done at Dan Valley Hospital my breast were the same size. I was totally devastated and upset that I had to sort this problem out myself and pay when it was a surgeons at Down Valley Hospital that made my breast completely different sizes so at the end I was very disappointed had I known that this was going to be the outcome? My decisions would have been completely different so overall was not happy. I think I should’ve been told this from the beginning before I made my decision as the decision cost me 19 1/2 thousand pounds.

Having previously had a lumpectomy on my right breast thirty years ago, I was reluctant to have surgery on my left breast when cancer was found there. In my eighties and with several other medical conditions initially I chose to receive medication. I was extremely lucky to be under the care of Mr Westbroek, who explained that I could now have the operation without a general anaesthetic, so I decided to go ahead and have not regretted it. All the care I received was outstanding and I can't speak too highly of all the staff I had contact with, who were friendly, reassuring and helpful. As it happened, by delaying the surgery, I was able to benefit from a radioactive tracker being inserted, which had only been in use for a few months, rather than the wire which I had all those years ago and which was more unpleasant. Another bonus was that I had the operation in the morning, so I was able to go home the same day, when thirty years ago I was an inpatient for ten days. The whole experience was so different and less traumatic than I had anticipated. There are some people who you feel better after just seeing them and Mr Westbroek is one of those people.

Overall my experience was very good. Before meeting Mr Westbroek I felt very confused about the next steps in the beginning i would have happily had a double masectomy with no reconstruction. After meeting with Mr Westbroek he made me feel very calm and comfortable after a discussion i then decided to have a masectomy with plans for a later reconstruction. I have no regrets choosing this route and in fact happy I did so. The surgery was done whilst awake and I went home the same day. I would like to add Mr Westbroek and all the staff at Darenth Valley hospital have all been brilliant. I was always treated with respect and dignity.

I am a very nervous patient of his, but when I recently saw him about my problem which is ongoing, he acted on this quickly, and reassured me that everything will be ok.

Fantastic experience from start to finish. Explained things simply and thoroughly to me, had so much patience regarding my concerns and took so much time to help put those concerns at ease.
