Qualifications

Dr Ballav trained in Endocrinology and Diabetes in Oxford and held several prestigious fellowships including the Transplant fellowship at University of Oxford, Novo Nordisk research foundation fellowship, Rising star award from Sanofi-Aventis, and Donell-Etzweiler International research scholarship at International Diabetes Centre, US. Dr Ballav graduated from University of Calcutta in India winning several gold medals and honours and went on to complete his training in medicine at several centres of excellence in Cambridge, Glasgow, Kent, and Leeds.

Dr. Ballav’s clinical and research interests in Endocrinology include Thyroid, Calcium and Bone metabolism, Adrenal, and Reproductive Endocrinology. His interests in Diabetes include cardio-metabolic risk management and technology. Dr Ballav has published several papers on these topics and presented at several national and international meetings including the American Diabetes Association Scientific sessions, European Association for Study of Diabetes Annual meetings, and Society for Endocrinology annual meetings. He has co-authored the chapter on Diabetes and Endocrinology in Medicine for MRCP (ed. Bessant, Birns, and Ford, Oxford University Press).

Dr. Ballav currently runs Type 1 and complex Type 2 diabetes clinics at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. He is part of the multidisciplinary team prescribing, reviewing, and escalating use of technology in management of people with Type 1 diabetes. He runs the antenatal clinic for pre-existing diabetes or pregnancy induced diabetes. He also runs general endocrine clinics reviewing patients with thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, calcium and bone related disorders, and reproductive problems. He attends the regional adrenal and pituitary multidisciplinary meetings.

Dr. Ballav has written several guidelines for Buckinghamshire including the guidance for management of Type 2 diabetes, new diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes in adults presenting with high blood glucose and ketones. He is currently part of the Integrated Diabetes Delivery Network unifying operating procedures and guidelines across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire (BOB) Integrated Care Board. He is part of the working groups drawing up regional guidelines on obesity, technology, and community management of diabetes. He also regularly advises on management of diabetes in the community by the community specialist nurses and primary care teams and has done multiple presentations to clinicians managing diabetes including general physicians, practice nurses, and clinical pharmacists.

Dr Ballav has a long-standing interest in medical education. He has been a Royal College Tutor and a lecturer for the clinical course for MRCP in London for more than a decade. His teaching experience include lecturing for the MSc Diabetes course in Leicester, lecturing for undergraduates from Oxford University and University of Buckingham Medical School. He is currently the Training Programme Director for Internal Medicine at Thames Valley (previously Oxford Deanery) and a member of the Specialty Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Physicians. He has been an education supervisor for trainees in general medicine and higher specialty trainees in Diabetes and Endocrinology.
