Mr Benjamin Cosway

Mr Benjamin Cosway is a Consultant ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Surgeon specialising in voice disorders, throat problems, head and neck conditions, thyroid surgery, and general adult ENT care.

He assesses and treats a wide range of ENT conditions including hoarseness, voice change, swallowing difficulties, throat discomfort, neck lumps, thyroid problems, sinus issues, nasal obstruction, and ear conditions. His approach is careful, thorough, and focused on accurate diagnosis, clear explanation, and patient reassurance.

He has particular expertise in laryngology, managing voice, airway, and swallowing disorders, as well as advanced head and neck surgery, including thyroid and salivary gland surgery. He is the only surgeon in the North East with dual subspecialist expertise in both laryngology and head, neck and thyroid surgery, providing comprehensive care for both routine and complex ENT conditions.

He holds national leadership roles in voice care and head and neck surgery, including involvement with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) and the British Laryngology Association, contributes to UK Head and Neck Cancer Guidelines, and leads advanced surgical training for specialist head and neck surgeons.

His research is supported by Cancer Research UK and the NIHR and focuses on improving outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer and persistent throat symptoms, with an emphasis on better function, fewer unnecessary interventions, and improved quality of life.

As a performing singer and member of Newcastle’s Voice of the Town Choir, he has first-hand understanding of the demands placed on the voice in professional use. His experience includes appearances at the London Palladium and national stadium tours, giving valuable insight when caring for singers, actors, broadcasters, teachers, and other professional voice users.
