I was initially very apprehensive about having any form of surgery to my back for on going sciatic back/leg pain, however Mo Akmal and the entire team of doctors, nurses and admin staff helped managed my condition amazingly. From initial consultation through to scans, surgery and post operative care, the personal service and ongoing reassurance was incredibly comforting. I would personally highly recommend the London Spine Unit to anyone suffering with back and/or neck pain.

I cannot thank Mr Mo Akmal and his team at The London Spine Unit enough for the care, expertise and support they have provided throughout my spinal journey. Over the past year, I underwent a steroid injection and PLDD procedure for an L4/5 herniated disc. Unfortunately, I later suffered an acute flare-up which resulted in severe symptoms and ultimately required a microdiscectomy. Throughout every stage of treatment, Mr Akmal and his team were exceptional. What impressed me most was that they treated me as an individual, not simply as an MRI scan. Whilst imaging is clearly important, Mr Akmal always took the time to listen to my symptoms, understand how they were affecting my day-to-day life, and base decisions on the whole clinical picture rather than relying solely on what the scans showed. As a patient, this made me feel heard, understood and genuinely involved in decisions about my care. Mr Akmal was always honest and transparent about my options, explaining the benefits and risks of each treatment while ensuring I never felt pressured. His calm, reassuring approach gave me confidence during what was a difficult and often frustrating time. The professionalism, compassion and expertise shown by the entire team have been outstanding. I would like to thank Mr Mo Akmal for carrying out as a day case ACDF C6-C7 Spinal fusion recently using a modified technique enabling a faster recovery. You are an amazing surgeon ! I have suffered with neck pain due to Cervical radiculopathy, a "pinched nerve" in my neck, which caused constant pain, numbness, tingling ("pins and needles"), and muscle weakness of my tricep for 18 months and had numerous sleepless nights. The operation lasted under two hours and immediately after coming round from anaesthetic I was pain free and two weeks later still pain free. I comfortably walked away from the Spine Unit unaided without assistance. The operation was performed by Mr Akmal with great skill. Infact the only medication needed after surgery was ibuprofen and paracetamol and they were stopped 7 days after the procedure. I am so grateful as this operation is life changing.. Thank you...

Having had very successful disc replacement & fusion surgery back in 2023, the inescapable affliction of getting old, found me requiring to seek help once again from Mr. Akmal and his team. Further deterioration in other joints resulted in needing another bout of disc replacements and fusion in my cervical spine, and cortex spacers in my lumber spine. So in late 2025 I embarked on another session of surgery and underwent the operation to replace, fuse and insert spacers in the offending areas of my Lumber & Cervical spine. Both areas were treated in the same surgery and having entered at 07:00, I once again walked out at 18:00 on the same day. 2 weeks later the key hole wounds had healed I was off painkillers and well on the way to full recovery. My experience again is a testimony not only to the personal skill and empathy of Mr. Akmal, but to all the people who enable such life changing surgery to happen, including the anaesthetist, surgical team, and ward staff.

After 30 years of relentless back pain, Mo Akmal fixed it in a day! Excellent service from the hospital, all the way through the procedure from arrival to departure on the same day was managed perfectly. Thank you all for a great job. 4 big screws, 2 rods and a Coflex device sorted everything out. Amazing it was all done through a 60mm incision with no visible stitches. Healed with virtually no scarring. Excellent.

Always great

I had spinal decompression/discectomy surgery at the LSU 3 weeks ago after suffering with excruciating nerve pain in my right leg for months that kept becoming worse. What began as random strange numbness in my right leg in November 2023 steadily developed into terrible sharp shooting nerve pain from June 2024 down the whole leg to my toes. MRI showed severe prolapsed L5 disc at S1 nerve root level with degeneration in the disc. I was walking with a large waddling gait since July, having muscle spasms, preventing me from driving, working, sleeping, looking after my young children, most things! I tried 2 different physios, osteo, acupuncture, nothing helped only made symptoms worsen. After a trip to A and E taken in by ambulance, being ignored by the junior doctors, no pain relief given or any tests conducted, I had an epidural injection in August privately which unfortunately didn’t help me personally though for my case however I have heard how it can offer relief to some patients. I then set about exploring the option of surgery. I went to various different clinics but wasn’t satisfied with the consultations I had, in that I felt they were rushed, I came out feeling they were dismissive of my symptoms and the level of impact this had on my life and the proposed 5 day hospital stay for surgery put me off too. Spinal Fusion Surgery: Dr Akmal changed my life I went to see Dr Mo Akmal at the Harley Street London Spine Unit Clinic after beeing for over 1 year under the care of the NHS. He was very professional and understanding of my situation and after seeing the MRIs he confirmed my health probelm being severe degenerative disc diseas at L5-S1 level. He offered me a few options, one of them being the Spinal Fusion surgery. I want to stress that he never put any pressure on me to choose for the best solution so I had to decide myself amongst the different options he gave me. I decided to go for the surgery since my situation was very bad. I had been in constant pain for over a year, not able to go back to work (plumber), unable to walk without pain for more than 10 minutes or stand. I am 32 years old. Once I decided to go for surgery, the clinic arranged my appointment within a week. I did all the pre-op tests in the clinic and finally went for my surgey on May 16, 2024. The surgery went really well, I was home on the same day and was able to walk without pain almost immediately. The clinic provided all the medication for the 2 weeks following the surgery and someone called every day for the first 3 days to check on me. After 3 weeks I can say I was able to go for 1 hour long walks and be back to normal life. I have been back to work as an industrial plumber after 3 months, not having any pain on the area treated.
