We had an excellent experience throughout the assessment process and felt extremely well supported from beginning to end. We initially had a consultation and assessment when our son was five. At that stage, the assessment concluded that there were not significant enough signs to confirm a diagnosis of autism, but that some traits could become more apparent as he got older and that a further review may be appropriate in the future. Looking back, this proved to be exactly right and gave us great confidence in the thorough and balanced approach taken. We never felt that there was any attempt to reach a predetermined diagnosis. A few years later, as some of those traits became more apparent, we returned for a further discussion, pre-assessment and assessment. This time, the assessment confirmed a diagnosis of autism. Throughout both assessment processes, our son was completely at ease. He was made to feel comfortable and the approach was very child-centred, which made a potentially daunting experience feel much more straightforward for him and for us as parents. The findings were explained extremely clearly and in a way that helped us to understand our son and his needs, rather than simply providing us with a diagnostic label. The post-assessment meeting was particularly thorough, professional, reassuring and supportive. There was plenty of time to discuss the findings, ask questions and make sure that we were comfortable with and understood the outcome.
