His ongoing research efforts focus on epilepsy epidemiology and utilising data to improve health outcomes for patients living with these conditions.

Dr D'Souza obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Otago in 1988, followed by a Master of Public Health in 1999. He completed his basic training and speciality training in Neurology, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2001. He subsequently undertook advanced sub-speciality training in epilepsy and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in epilepsy epidemiology from Massey University in 2009. Dr D'Souza is an active member of several professional organisations, including the American Epilepsy Society, and has contributed to the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Australian Pregnancy Register of Antiepileptic Drugs.
