Dr Wendyl D'Souza

Professor Wendyl D'Souza is a highly regarded Consultant Neurologist, Epilepsy Specialist, and Epidemiologist who provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing complex neurological conditions. He focuses on diagnosing and managing seizures, suspected seizures, epilepsy, and their mimickers. With a patient-centred approach, Dr D'Souza is dedicated to maximising the quality of life and independence of his patients, utilising the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advancements. He provides tailored care for individuals across a broad age spectrum, from adolescents to elderly patients.

Dr D'Souza possesses extensive expertise in addressing the clinical and personal impacts of epilepsy, including how new-onset seizures affect daily life, education, driving, pregnancy, work, and travel. His clinical interests encompass drug-resistant epilepsy, idiopathic generalised epilepsies, psychogenic non-epileptic attacks, and autoimmune epilepsies. He is also actively involved in epilepsy pre-surgical evaluations and evaluating outcomes for antiseizure medications and devices. His ongoing research efforts focus on epilepsy epidemiology and utilising data to improve health outcomes for patients living with these conditions.

Dr D'Souza obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Otago in 1988, followed by a Master of Public Health in 1999. He completed his basic training and speciality training in Neurology, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2001. He subsequently undertook advanced sub-speciality training in epilepsy and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in epilepsy epidemiology from Massey University in 2009. Dr D'Souza is an active member of several professional organisations, including the American Epilepsy Society, and has contributed to the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Australian Pregnancy Register of Antiepileptic Drugs.
