Dr Vijith “Vij” Vijayasekaran AM is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon based in Perth, Western Australia, with more than two decades of experience spanning aesthetic, reconstructive, hand, and paediatric surgery. He holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and works across both public and private hospitals in Perth, including Assure Cosmetic Centre, the Western Australian Plastic Surgery Centre, HANDOC, and Perth Children’s Hospital.

Known simply as “Dr Vij” to his patients, he combines meticulous surgical technique with a genuine commitment to patient education — believing that a well-informed patient makes the best decisions about their own care.

Training & Qualifications

Vij graduated from the University of Western Australia’s medical school in 1996 with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. He completed his specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2005, undertaken at Royal Perth Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).

He then spent a further two and a half years in subspecialty fellowship training in Melbourne and Toronto, Canada. In Melbourne, he undertook the Advanced Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship — becoming the first surgeon in Australia to complete this fellowship, awarded by the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) — followed by a year in paediatric plastic surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital. He then spent a year at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, one of the world’s leading paediatric hospitals, working under renowned surgeons including cleft surgeon Dr David Fisher.

On completing his fellowship training, Vij returned to Perth, where he has practised ever since across both the public and private hospital systems.

Honours & Recognition

In 2003, Vij was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) — alongside his wife, Dr Priya — for providing medical expertise and assistance to victims of the Bali bombings at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. In the same year, Vij and Priya were jointly named “Australian of the Year” by The Australian newspaper, nominated by the Australian public and selected by the paper’s editorial committee.

Their story reached a wider audience when Vij was portrayed by actor Arka Das in the television series Bali 2002, which dramatised the events and the medical response that followed the bombings.

Vij maintains one of the broadest scopes of practice among Australian plastic surgeons, spanning:

• Aesthetic breast surgery — augmentation, reduction, lift (mastopexy), and revision surgery

• Body contouring — abdominoplasty, belt lipectomy, brachioplasty, thigh lift, liposculpture, and post-weight-loss surgery

• Facial surgery — rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, and otoplasty

• Reconstructive surgery —skin cancer surgery, scar revision, and facial trauma

• Hand and upper limb surgery — carpal tunnel, Dupuytren’s disease, arthritis, and elective and trauma hand surgery

• Paediatric plastic surgery — including cleft lip and palate and related craniofacial conditions

Research & Teaching

Vij has undertaken research across multiple areas of plastic surgery and has multiple publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He is actively involved in surgical education at every level — from medical students and general practitioners through to trainee plastic surgeons — reflected in his ongoing leadership roles within plastic surgery training in Australia.

Beyond the Operating Theatre

Vij is married to Priya, a paediatric anaesthetist, and is a proud father of three daughters. Outside of surgery, he is an enthusiastic runner, a committed gym-goer, and an avid drone photographer.
