Dr Pathiranage Abeyratne

Dr Pathiranage Abeyratne is a highly regarded Specialist Geriatrician and General Physician who has dedicated his career to the comprehensive care of older adults. With a clinical focus on acute geriatric medicine, perioperative care, and cognitive impairment, Dr Abeyratne is committed to improving the health, independence, and quality of life of his patients. He works collaboratively with patients, their families, and multidisciplinary teams to manage complex, age-related conditions, ensuring that each individual receives personalised and compassionate care.

Throughout his career, Dr Abeyratne has held significant clinical leadership roles and contributed to the advancement of geriatric care models. Notably, he was instrumental in establishing an innovative Orthogeriatric model of care within the public health system, serving as the Clinical Lead for this service for several years. His work in this area has helped streamline the management of older patients undergoing orthopaedic procedures, particularly those recovering from hip fractures. Dr Abeyratne also has a keen interest in comprehensive assessments prior to complex procedures, such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), and continues to consult across both public and private hospital settings.

Dr Abeyratne obtained his primary medical qualification, completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Sri Lanka, qualifying in 1996. After relocating to Australia, he pursued advanced training in Geriatric Medicine to specialise in the care of the ageing population. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Medicine. Dr Abeyratne is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and an active Member of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine.
