Dr Read graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from The University of Queensland in 1983. Following his graduation, he gained invaluable clinical experience working within major metropolitan hospitals in Queensland before serving as a Medical Superintendent with Right of Private Practice in a rural community. During this time in rural medicine, he provided a complete spectrum of medical services, including emergency care, hospital inpatient management, surgery, and obstetrics. He is also accredited as a Designated Aviation Medical Practitioner, qualifying him to conduct official aviation medical examinations.

In addition to general family medicine, Dr Read has developed a strong clinical focus on performing vasectomy and circumcision procedures.
