Dr Michael Piperoglou

Dr Michael Piperoglou is a highly regarded Consultant Psychiatrist who provides comprehensive mental health care for adult patients. Dr Piperoglou is dedicated to minimising medication side-effects to enhance his patients' overall well-being and quality of life. He maintains a strong interest in the interface between general medicine and psychiatry, particularly exploring how physical health conditions, such as mild thyroid disease, can influence mood symptoms.

His clinical practice encompasses a broad range of psychiatric conditions, with a particular focus on complex psychopharmacology and treatment-resistant disorders. Dr Piperoglou has extensive expertise in the assessment and management of bipolar disorder, adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and atypical depression. He is highly skilled in utilising advanced pharmacological strategies, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for difficult-to-treat depression. Additionally, he is interested in the integration of nutraceuticals, such as fish oils, to address residual symptoms of anxiety and depression, and explores the therapeutic potential of medicinal cannabis within psychiatric care.

Dr Piperoglou completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Monash University in 1978. He went on to obtain a Diploma of Psychological Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1985, followed by a Master of Philosophy from the same institution, where he conducted research into the role of specific dietary supplements in managing anxiety and cognitive symptoms. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 1986. Dr Piperoglou is an active member of the professional medical community, serving as the Chairperson of the Clinical Psychopharmacology Group, which he co-founded in 1997. He is also an Accredited Member of the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry, a member of the Australian ADHD Professionals Association, and a member of the International Society of Bipolar Disorders.
