Dr Michael Friedlander

Dr Michael Friedlander is a highly distinguished Medical Oncologist who is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to patients navigating a cancer diagnosis. With a reassuring and patient-centred approach, he focuses on delivering personalised treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of each individual. He works closely within multidisciplinary teams to ensure that patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care throughout their treatment journey, prioritising both clinical excellence and patient well-being.

His primary clinical interests encompass a broad range of malignancies, with a particular focus on gynaecological cancers, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, and germ cell tumours. Dr Friedlander has been a pioneer in the field of oncology, having been instrumental in establishing the first hereditary cancer clinic in Australia. He maintains a strong clinical and research interest in hereditary breast and ovarian cancers, actively participating in clinical trials involving targeted therapies such as PARP inhibitors for patients with BRCA mutations, as well as integrating patient-reported outcomes to improve quality of life during treatment.

Dr Friedlander obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) with Honours from the University of Birmingham in 1975. He went on to complete his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and achieved membership with the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1978. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1984. Throughout his career, he has held numerous prominent leadership roles, including serving as President of the International Society of Gynaecological Oncology and as the founding Chairman of the Australia and New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group.
