Dr Kirthi Kumar

Dr Kirthi Kumar is a highly qualified Consultant Psychiatrist based in Melbourne, Australia. He provides comprehensive psychiatric care, specialising in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of a diverse range of mental health conditions. With a clinical focus that spans general adult psychiatry, as well as select youth and old age psychiatry, Dr Kumar is dedicated to delivering evidence-based, patient-centred care. Throughout his career, Dr Kumar has gained extensive experience in both clinical and academic psychiatry, working across various healthcare settings in Australia and overseas. He has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Head of General Hospital Psychiatry (Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry) and the Head of Emergency Mental Health Services. His broad expertise allows him to manage complex presentations, including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and schizophrenia. Additionally, he has a keen interest in treating patients with brain injuries, dementia-related disorders, personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and Tourette and tic disorders.

Dr Kumar completed his primary medical education in India, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Mysore in 1993. He went on to pursue postgraduate training in psychiatry, obtaining a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) and a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Psychiatry. After relocating to Australia, he completed his specialist training and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 2006.
