Dr Jennifer Matthei is an experienced medical practitioner with more than 30 years of clinical practice and a particular focus on obesity medicine, bariatric care, and long-term weight management. She specialises in comprehensive medical obesity management and the ongoing care of patients before and after bariatric surgery.
Dr Matthei graduated with honours from the University of New South Wales in 1994. She completed her internship at St George Hospital, followed by residency training at Nepean Hospital and The Children's Hospital at Westmead. She subsequently undertook General Practice training in Elderslie, Gilgandra, and Dubbo, achieving Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 1998.
For the majority of her career, Dr Matthei worked in General Practice, developing extensive experience in preventative healthcare, chronic disease management, and patient-centred primary care. In 2018, she developed a specialist interest in bariatric medicine and obesity management, focusing on evidence-based approaches to weight management and metabolic health.
Dr Matthei works closely with multidisciplinary bariatric teams, providing comprehensive medical obesity treatment and long-term post-bariatric surgical follow-up. She is recognised as an Accredited Bariatric Care Specialist by the Surgical Review Corporation. She also performs oesophageal manometry investigations for both bariatric and non-bariatric patients, assisting in the assessment of oesophageal motility disorders.
Her specialist training includes programmes with SCOPE Obesity, Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, and Australia and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society. She is currently working towards Fellowship with the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine and is an active member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Obesity Special Interest Group.
