Dr Ilesh Patel, a glaucoma and cataract surgeon, consults at SAN Day Surgery Hornsby and Chatswood Private Hospital. He graduated from the University of New South Wales and received his ophthalmology training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital/Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He also earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, USA, which focused on ophthalmic epidemiology and biostatistics. Following that, he achieved the Delta Omega Scholarship to pursue a fellowship in preventative ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Hospital's Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore, USA. Dr Patel has completed fellowships from the Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins Hospital as well as the Royal Manchester Eye Hospital in the UK where he gained specialist training in glaucoma.
Dr Patel's interests include glaucoma surgery, improving patient knowledge of glaucoma, and public health concerns related to glaucoma screening and treatment. He ensures to stay up-to-date with the latest advances in cataract surgery, and he currently serves on Glaucoma Australia's expert advisory council.
Dr Patel's research at Johns Hopkins focused on the prevention of blindness in rural Africa and Nepal, and he remains involved in research as an Associate Research Fellow at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals, and his current topics are the use of micro-trabecular shunts to perform less invasive glaucoma surgery and the prevention of blindness in rural Tanzania.
